Role overview

Database administration

• Manage and monitor databases and handle service requests, product maintenance requests, and support calls.
• Initiate and execute database projects based on business requirements.
• Maintain database replication to the disaster-recovery site with minimal lag and keep standby databases up to date.
• Tune performance, monitor hit ratios, gather statistics, and take optimization actions.
• Maintain backups, restoration readiness, database health, space monitoring, and growth reporting.
• Harden databases, upgrade versions, manage patches, and implement audit and ISO recommendations.

Monitoring and service operations

• Monitor database consistency, alerts, error logs, application jobs and services, archive logs, and critical end-of-day and beginning-of-day status.
• Take corrective action or escalate failures, and ensure escalations reach the appropriate people on time.
• Coordinate managed-service vendor deliverables, service-level agreements, and onsite DBA resource scheduling.
• Provide second-level, 24x7 escalation support for relational database management systems.
• Raise and follow up on vendor service requests and product maintenance requests until closure.

Coordination and documentation

• Identify root causes and implement permanent solutions to database problems.
• Coordinate with database, Unix and Windows systems, storage, IT operations, project, application support, vendor, cloud, and disaster-recovery teams.
• Communicate proactively with internal customers and attend project meetings to coordinate resource allocation.
• Maintain process manuals, standard operating procedures, checklists, reports, system studies, and escalation matrices.
• Automate database jobs where possible, including using shell scripts; perform Db2 reorganization activity in the stated netbanking setup.

Role scope and measures

• The role covers Oracle, Sybase, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, MongoDB, and Db2 database administration.
• Key performance measures include a 99.5% database uptime target and 100% database backup coverage.
• The role tracks database performance, security and audit implementation, patch management, cost, service levels, and operational reporting.
