Role overview

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end solution architecture from discovery through delivery and produce designs, high-level designs, option assessments and architecture decision records.
• Present proposals through Design Authority and governance forums; translate business, functional and non-functional needs into scalable solutions.
• Define architecture across applications, integrations, cloud services, data flows and infrastructure, including integration patterns and API strategies.
• Collaborate with engineering teams, support modernisation and transformation, and balance delivery needs with technical constraints and long-term objectives.
• Provide technical leadership, issue resolution, risk management and architecture assurance; contribute to peer reviews and quality standards.
• Support estimation, technical planning and roadmaps, and mentor engineers, developers and junior architects where appropriate.

Required experience

• Solution Architect experience in complex enterprise, consulting or transformation environments.
• Strong understanding of architecture governance, Design Authority and solution architecture methodologies.
• Experience producing solution designs, high-level designs, option assessments and architecture decision records.
• Strong stakeholder engagement across business, technical and delivery teams.
• Experience with Jira, Confluence and UML modelling tools; understanding of modern application architectures and software delivery practices.
• Knowledge of Java 17/21, XML and JSON schemas, RESTful services, API-driven architectures, enterprise integration patterns and relational databases.
• Experience with cloud-hosted and hybrid solutions, ideally AWS; understanding of AWS EC2, EKS and S3.
• Experience designing solutions using messaging technologies such as RabbitMQ or IBM MQ.
• Experience supporting projects from requirements and design through implementation and production deployment.
• The role is subject to UK Baseline Personnel Security Standard screening; additional National Security Vetting may apply, potentially including SC or DV eligibility.

Preferred experience

• Preferred experience includes hybrid cloud and cloud transformation, microservices, cloud-native design, Docker, Kubernetes, DevSecOps and CI/CD.
• Experience in regulated or secure enterprise environments, TOGAF, RFI/RFP and technology selection, Agile, Scrum or SAFe is preferred.
• Exposure to observability, operational readiness, governance forums, technical design reviews and enterprise change initiatives is preferred.
• Active UK Security Clearance is listed as preferred.

Education

• A bachelor's degree is listed as preferred education.
