Role overview

Lead the Data Analysis team, which is a software and algorithm engineering team building applications that turn atomic force microscope scan data into 3D measurements.

The role combines hands-on technical leadership and people management, shaping software strategy and delivery across a growing, cross-functional organisation.

The software processes scientific data and must run robustly and reliably inside semiconductor fabs without internet access or cloud services.

Compensation and benefits

  • Salary is £70,000–£80,000, depending on experience.
  • Benefits include death-in-service cover, private healthcare, a discretionary annual bonus scheme and an EMI share scheme.
  • The role includes an annual salary review and work on semiconductor technology.

Team leadership and delivery

  • Lead, mentor and develop scientific software engineers; coach through one-to-ones, appraisals, hiring and career development.
  • Own software strategy and guide team practices, algorithms, application architecture and tooling.
  • Plan, track and report progress with project leads, and integrate team work into wider programme plans.
  • Manage technical debt and improve processes using Agile and Lean practices.

Technical work and collaboration

  • Review code and support algorithm and architecture decisions while staying close to the data.
  • Guide image processing, including flattening, feature recognition, masking, skew correction and height measurement, and statistical analysis of measurements.
  • Ensure the application, RabbitMQ interface and visualisation run reliably in offline, on-premises fabs without cloud dependency.
  • Collaborate with Software Project Lead, R&D, Systems Engineering, Product and Applications teams; manage external delivery partners.

What we're looking for

  • Experience leading and developing technical teams, including appraisals, career development and recruitment.
  • Strong hands-on software development background; image processing, computer vision or scientific data analysis experience is ideal.
  • Strong industry Python skills; practical Agile and Lean experience; understanding of the software development lifecycle and best practice.
  • Experience with external partners or suppliers and project management.
  • Clear communication in English and a collaborative, pragmatic, self-motivated approach.
  • At least five years' software development experience and at least five years' technical leadership or people management experience.

Desirable experience

  • Experience developing software for 3D imaging or scientific data processing and visualisation is desirable.
  • Metrology, microscopy, semiconductor or other complex engineering product background is desirable.
  • Experience in another scientific or technical discipline, backed by strong software expertise, is desirable.
