Mission and role
The backend infrastructure team establishes engineering standards for quality, scalability, and maintainability, and supports fast, reliable product development.
The team maintains the core Ruby on Rails application and improves the developer experience through upgrades, shared tooling, and cross-team infrastructure work.
Fullscript is hiring a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead the backend infrastructure team through people leadership, technical direction, and project execution.
Team and technical leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop engineers through expectations, feedback, career development, and performance management.
- Build a team culture of ownership, collaboration, learning, and technical excellence.
- Own the roadmap, balancing developer needs, foundational improvements, and long-term application health.
- Guide Rails monolith technical direction and improve code structure, maintainability, scalability, reliability, and security.
- Lead foundational Ruby, Rails, framework, and dependency upgrades and coordinate migration and release plans.
Platform delivery and outcomes
- Improve developer productivity through shared tooling, CI checks, testing infrastructure, documentation, and simpler workflows.
- Oversee feature flags, end-to-end tests, and infrastructure as code within the monolith.
- Coordinate cross-team projects with clear scope, ownership, dependencies, risks, and progress.
- Partner with product engineering teams to resolve recurring technical problems and support shared-tool and standards adoption.
- Track outcomes such as faster feedback, fewer recurring failures, and reduced workarounds for platform limitations.
How the team approaches the work
- Treat developers as platform users and involve them in shaping solutions to their day-to-day problems.
- Connect platform investments to developer productivity, application reliability, and product delivery.
- Make standards practical and support them with clear explanations and tooling.
- Modernize incrementally and purposefully, accounting for benefits, costs, and migration risks.
- Treat documentation, communication, and support as part of delivery; balance current commitments with future maintenance costs.
Required qualifications
- Experience managing software engineers, including coaching, career development, performance management, and hiring.
- Strong backend engineering background with Ruby on Rails and production application maintenance experience.
- Sound technical judgment across application architecture, testing, performance, reliability, and security.
- Experience leading platform, infrastructure, developer experience, or multi-team technical work.
- Project and program management ability, including dependency coordination, delivery risk management, and rollout guidance.
- Ability to prioritize broad technical needs, communicate their value, collaborate across teams, and balance management with technical delivery.
Bonus experience
- Experience with large Rails monoliths, high-scale web applications, or major framework upgrades and migrations.
- Experience improving CI pipelines, test suites, feature flag systems, or developer tooling.
- Familiarity with infrastructure as code, React, Remix, GraphQL, e-commerce, health tech, or thoughtful AI-assisted engineering tools.
