Role overview

Microsoft's Cloud Operations + Innovation team operates a global datacenter portfolio supporting its cloud services.

The engineer is accountable for availability, safety, and operational performance of mechanical and electrical infrastructure at leased datacenters.

The role governs changes in live environments, manages landlord relationships, and supports regional critical-environment risks and escalations.

The role is based at leased datacenter sites; work arrangements when off site are to be defined with the manager.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily mechanical and electrical operations and preventive and corrective maintenance at datacenters.
  • Protect uptime and reliability through monitoring, maintenance oversight, and risk mitigation.
  • Govern maintenance procedures, incident reviews and root cause analyses, and change management.
  • Drive safety and compliance, resolve risks promptly, and support emergency response as a facilities escalation point.
  • Work with engineering teams, vendors, and landlord partners to improve performance and resolve regional issues.
  • Reduce risk and human error; advance cost optimization and energy efficiency; measure and report power, temperature, and SLA metrics.
  • Communicate customer impact and plan operational events and maintenance windows to minimize disruption.
  • Provide regional subject-matter support across leased datacenters, mentor colleagues, and share best practices.
  • Support new-site onboarding, landlord transitions, and capacity handovers; backfill peer field service engineers when needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and 7+ years of industry experience in a datacenter or other critical-environment facility, or 10+ years of industry experience and college coursework.
  • At least 5 years of experience with critical-environment infrastructure, such as UPS, generators, chillers, or AHUs.
  • Experience applying formal maintenance and change controls (MOP/SOP/EOP) and participating in root cause analysis in a live production environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly across the sub-region for onsite support; travel is typically up to 25–30% of working time, depending on business need.

Work arrangement

  • The role is based at leased datacenter sites and includes remote and onsite support across the sub-region.
  • The engineer may partner with their manager to define how they work when not on site.
