About Excelerate Energy

Excelerate Energy works to enhance energy security through LNG and power infrastructure solutions.

The company describes a focus on reliable delivery, safety, quality, environmental stewardship, collaboration, and growth.

Job summary

Legal Counsel is part of the Legal Department, supporting the development, execution, and operation of international LNG and energy infrastructure projects.

Reporting to Senior Counsel, the role supports commercial and project agreements, business teams, transaction execution, project development, existing contracts, claims, and disputes.

The role offers exposure to cross-border transactions, LNG commercial arrangements, and major infrastructure projects, with increasing ownership as experience develops.

Essential duties

  • Draft, review, and negotiate project and commercial agreements, including LNG and gas sales, transportation, terminal, regasification, maritime, EPC, construction, guarantee, and credit support documents.
  • Advise business teams on legal and contractual risks and support contract administration, obligations, milestones, deliverables, and claims.
  • Prepare first-pass markups, comparison tables, issue lists, and contract summaries for senior counsel.
  • Support due diligence, transaction management, project approvals, and corporate governance; coordinate external counsel and advisors.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare written advice, briefing notes, and presentations.
  • Attend meetings, negotiations, and stakeholder calls; track actions and follow-up items.
  • Use AI and legal technology for drafting, research, document review, and knowledge management, with appropriate review and quality control.

Qualifications and experience

  • Qualified lawyer in England and Wales, the United States (Texas or New York), or another recognised common-law jurisdiction.
  • Approximately three to five years of post-qualification experience, strong academic credentials, and training at a top-tier international law firm.
  • Required experience in LNG/energy and project finance/project development, including drafting and negotiating complex project and finance contracts.
  • LNG supply, regasification, terminal, or vessel-arrangement experience is strongly preferred; in-house or secondment experience is preferred.
  • Cross-border transactions or emerging-market project experience is beneficial.

Skills and competencies

  • Strong commercial contract drafting, negotiation, issue-spotting, and practical legal judgment.
  • Able to identify material risks and recommend commercially focused solutions while supporting business objectives.
  • Can independently manage day-to-day matters and escalate appropriately.
  • Clear written and verbal communication for internal stakeholders; strong organisation and attention to detail.
  • Able to manage transactions and competing workstreams, collaborate across functions and jurisdictions, and adapt in an international environment.
  • Practical use of AI and other technology tools, with critical review of outputs.

Work environment

  • The role collaborates across functions, jurisdictions, and time zones.
  • Office schedule and travel requirements are to be confirmed.
  • The description includes routine sitting and communication, occasional standing, walking, reaching, and lifting or moving up to 25 pounds.
