Job Overview

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board wishes to appoint a full-time substantive Consultant Vascular Surgeon to join the existing team of seven Consultant Vascular Surgeons who provide the service across North Wales.

The post is a combination of replacement and expansion, in part arising as a result of a move to increase provision of surgical services at our spoke sites.

The successful candidates will form part of a rota consisting of 1 week in 8 as Vascular Consultant of the Week (VCOW) and 1 night in 8 on call overnight.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

  • The post holder will work collaboratively with Consultant colleagues, as appropriate, to provide specialist services at the designated hospitals, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness.
  • The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in liaison with Consultant colleagues and for the proper functioning of the department in line with the Operational Policy and Strategic Plan (as amended from time to time).
  • The post holder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff. If appropriate the post holder will be named in the contracts of resident doctors as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.
  • The post holder will be required to participate in continuing medical education in ways which are acceptable to the Educational Lead, Educational Director of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, and the Chief Executive Officer.
  • The post holder will be required to participate in, and contribute to, Clinical Audit in line with the Health Board’s policy on the implementation of Clinical Governance.
  • The post holder will participate in the North Wales Vascular Network on-call rota.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Specialist Registration or within 6 months of obtaining CCT from date of interview
  • Specialist Registration in Vascular Surgery
  • FRCS (Vascular) or equivalent qualification
  • An appropriate higher Vascular Surgical qualification
  • Desirable criteria
  • MD or other higher degree

Experience

  • Essential criteria
  • Broad training in Vascular Surgery
  • Broad Vascular Surgery experience
  • Experience in management of Vascular Trauma
  • Commitment to participating in and understanding of the management process
  • Experience of delivering postgraduate teaching
  • Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship in Vascular Surgery
  • Experience in EVAR, and other endovascular interventions
  • Evidence of management training
  • Experience in leading a multi-disciplinary team

Skills And Abilities

  • Essential criteria
  • Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working
  • Evidence of teaching medical students and junior doctors
  • Counselling skills
  • Up-to-date with current practices in Vascular Surgery
