Cloud Engineer I is a mid-level engineering role focused on improving the reliability, security, and operational maturity of enterprise cloud and hybrid infrastructure platforms.
The role is part of the Enterprise Compute and Storage Services team and focuses on Azure operations, automation, monitoring, backup, alerting, and Infrastructure as Code.
This is a hands-on builder and improver role involving production Azure platforms, operational automation, observability, recovery readiness, and collaboration with senior engineers and adjacent digital IT teams.
Cloud and Infrastructure Operations
- Operate and support Azure and hybrid infrastructure services in production, including compute, storage, networking, and foundational platform services.
- Execute production changes with change control, validation, documentation, and rollback planning.
- Troubleshoot availability, performance, capacity, and configuration issues across cloud and virtualization layers and drive them to root cause.
- Participate in an on-call rotation supporting critical ECSS-managed platforms.
Automation and Infrastructure as Code
- Design, build, and improve automation to reduce manual operational work and increase reliability.
- Write and maintain PowerShell, Bash, and/or Python scripts and tooling for platform operations, validation, and incident response.
- Contribute to Terraform and/or Bicep Infrastructure as Code initiatives by developing, testing, and improving reusable modules and standards.
Monitoring, Recovery, and Operations
- Improve observability using logs, metrics, dashboards, and alerts, while tuning alerting to reduce noise and improve actionable signal.
- Participate in incident response, root-cause analysis, and post-incident corrective and preventive improvements.
- Support backup and recovery solutions, restore testing, and recovery-readiness activities.
- Maintain runbooks, knowledge articles, diagrams, and operational documentation and identify opportunities to standardize and simplify operations.
Required Experience and Skills
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience in cloud, infrastructure, or systems engineering roles.
- Hands-on Azure experience operating and troubleshooting production workloads is required.
- Experience supporting Windows and/or Linux systems, automation and scripting, monitoring or logging platforms, and structured operational processes.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and/or Bicep.
- Hands-on experience with Azure virtual machines, storage, networking, and identity or Entra ID.
- Exposure to backup, disaster recovery, resiliency planning, and hybrid Azure and on-premises virtualized environments is requested.
- Relevant Azure Administrator Associate, Azure Solutions Architect Associate, or Linux certifications are preferred.
