Bicycle Unit (Full-Time)

OPEN TO CURRENT PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY POLICE OFFICERS ONLY The Prince William County Police Department is recruiting for the position of Full -Time Bicycle Unit .

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Members assigned to the bicycle unit provide a flexible and proactive means of policing in designated areas of the County, supporting the Department’s commitment to community-oriented policing.

The position involves a range of duties under general supervision, including targeted enforcement, patrolling residential areas, preventing retail theft, participating in special events, and attending community engagement activities DURATION OF ASSIGNMENT: This is a minimum 2-year assignment.

RANK: Police Officer/Detective PD01 and Master Police Officer PD02.

Must not be on probation as of the closing date.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Candidates must possess at least a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Successful completion of the Basic Bicycle Patrol School is required, but this is not a prerequisite at the time of application.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: General knowledge of law enforcement methods, practices, and procedures Familiarity with the geography of the County Understanding of Police Department rules and regulations Ability to follow both oral and written instructions Skilled in interacting with the public in a professional and respectful manner Proficient in the use of firearms and operation of police vehicles Physically capable, with the stamina to meet rigorous demands Ability to operate a bicycle in diverse and challenging environments In addition to the above qualifications, selection will be based on panel interview and squad file review of performance evaluations, supervisor recommendations, training, experience, and demonstrated interest in the position. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must be in good physical condition and appearance and must pass the physical fitness requirements outlined in General Order 28.19 (B-2). Ability to work a flexible schedule. Due to the nature of the assignment, members of the Bicycle Patrol Team are also part of the Department’s Civil Disturbance Unit (CDU) and may be called upon for Search and Rescue missions. Members must be available for on-call duty and able to respond to urgent situations as needed. Those selected who have not attended Basic Bicycle Patrol School will be required to complete the next available session, which is physically demanding and includes substantial cardiovascular activity.
