A Barista is a specialized hospitality professional responsible for crafting high-quality beverages, maintaining equipment, and providing excellent customer service in environments like cafes, hotels, and restaurants.
Their role often extends beyond drink preparation to include food handling, inventory management, and technical troubleshooting.
1. Beverage Preparation & Service
- **Specialty Crafting:** Prepare and serve a variety of hot and cold beverages, including espresso-based drinks (lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos), teas, smoothies, and blended drinks.
- **Technique Mastery:** Grind and blend coffee beans accurately, ensuring correct water temperature, brewing time, and coffee-to-water ratios for optimal flavor.
- **Customization:** Tailor drinks to specific customer preferences, including dairy alternatives, flavor syrups, and temperature adjustments.
- **Latte Art:** Create visually appealing foam designs like hearts, rosettas, or tulips to enhance drink presentation.
2. Customer Interaction & Sales
- **Guest Engagement:** Greet customers warmly as they enter and create a welcoming, professional atmosphere.
- **Menu Education:** Answer questions about ingredients, flavor profiles, and origins; offer personalized recommendations based on customer preferences.
- **Order Management:** Accurately take orders, paying attention to specific details like roast preferences or sugar ratios.
- **Upselling:** Promote specials, seasonal drinks, and food items (pastries, sandwiches) to enhance the customer experience and increase sales.
3. Equipment & Operations
- **Technical Maintenance:** Operate and clean complex machinery, including espresso machines, grinders, blenders, and POS systems.
- **Troubleshooting:** Perform daily calibrations, purge steam wands, and report any maintenance or repair needs for brewing equipment.
- **Inventory Management:** Monitor stock levels of beans, milk, syrups, and disposables; replenish supplies and report low inventory to management.
- **Financial Accuracy:** Process cash and credit card payments accurately using POS systems and manage cash register till procedures.
4. Cleanliness & Safety
- **Sanitization:** Maintain a clean workspace, including counters, bar areas, and seating; wash utensils, dishes, and coffee equipment regularly.
- **Health Compliance:** Strictly follow food safety, hygiene, and local health regulations to ensure a safe environment for staff and guests.
- **Opening/Closing:** Prepare the premises for service in the morning (setting up seating, dialing in machines) or follow procedures to clean and close the outlet at the end of the day.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- **Soft Skills:** Active listening, effective verbal communication, multitasking, and the ability to remain calm under pressure during peak hours.
- **Physical Stamina:** Capability to stand for long periods, walk, bend, and occasionally lift items up to 25 lbs (e.g., milk crates).
- **Education:** Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent; some venues prefer barista certifications or prior hospitality experience.
- Pay: From QAR3,000.00 per month
