Role overview

Supports and oversees operational elements of the Guardian digital journalist scheme, which incorporates an apprenticeship programme.

The role champions editorial excellence, supports participant growth, aligns training with desk requirements, and supports onboarding, reviews, and cohort community-building.

The position is a full-time, two-year fixed-term contract or an internal staff secondment.

Responsibilities

  • Support day-to-day delivery of the digital journalist scheme and apprenticeship programme.
  • Coordinate digital journalist placements on editorial desks, helping participants develop through practice and provide flexible editorial cover.
  • Build relationships with desk editors to gather feedback on skills needs.
  • Contribute to internal and external training plans and deliver specialist editorial workshops when required.
  • Coordinate the training timetable with operational needs and maintain programme plans, calendars, trackers, and documentation.
  • Coordinate programme activities, deadlines, milestones, and ongoing progress reviews; communicate with participants, editors, and others.
  • Identify and escalate operational issues; build cohort community and support participants to meet their potential and editorial standards.
  • Work with the digital journalist administrative team on central rotas and flexible-cover processes.

About you

  • Experience delivering or coordinating training and supporting early-career talent, trainees, or formal apprenticeship schemes.
  • Understanding of high editorial standards and the skills journalists need now, with curiosity about the future of journalism.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to deliver projects to deadline; first-rate communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience leading a small team or commitment to developing those skills.
  • Training design or delivery experience, ideally in an editorial environment, is desirable.
  • Ability to bring a diverse perspective is desirable.

Benefits and culture

  • Benefits include annual leave, pension, volunteering days, season-ticket loans, life cover, income protection, and optional dental insurance.
  • The Guardian offers enhanced family leave policies, employee forums, wellbeing resources, fitness classes, and learning and development opportunities.

Application
