Role overview

Amazon Canada Technology is hiring an Applied Scientist to advance science for the Canadian digital commerce market.

The role develops reasoning LLMs, embedding models, cross-encoder rankers, and multi-objective optimization systems for product discovery.

The work spans problem diagnosis, model building and training, and alignment with customer and shopping outcomes.

The scientist will help define long-term science strategy and partner with Core Search, Returns, product management, software engineering, and BI/data engineering teams.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop personalized multimodal thinking-LLM techniques for customers, search, queries, ranking, and products across primary and secondary languages.
  • Train LLMs using shopping, returns, and reasoning data, including continued pre-training, reinforcement learning, and instruction tuning.
  • Analyze Canadian ranking-quality gaps and compare model freshness and architecture with other marketplaces.
  • Formulate testable ranking hypotheses and run offline evaluations and online experiments; validate feature distributions and local coverage.
  • Lead query-segment and category error analysis, including Canadian bilingual and thin-category gaps.
  • Own metric trade-off analysis and acceptable-regression boundaries; partner on hypotheses, training, and quality gates.
  • Classify feature-expansion effort by availability, pipeline extension, locale training, or feasibility.

Basic qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience building models for business applications.
  • Experience in CS, CE, ML, or a related field.
  • Programming experience in Java, C++, Python, or a related language.
  • Experience in at least one of algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, or high-performance computing.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience using Unix/Linux.
  • PhD, or a master’s degree and experience in CS, CE, ML, or a related field.
  • Experience understanding performance metrics and developing measures of progress against KPIs.

About the team

Amazon.ca Technology builds products and services for Canadian customers and addresses challenges specific to the Canadian market while contributing to global technology initiatives.

Compensation

  • The listed annual base salary range is CAD 149,300–249,300 for Vancouver, British Columbia, and Toronto, Ontario.
  • Total compensation may include sign-on payments and restricted stock units; final compensation depends on experience, qualifications, and location.
