Role overview

Alexa Connections aims to provide a trusted communication agent across calls, text, email, and other connection surfaces.

The applied scientist will build language intelligence that understands context and acts on customers' behalf while protecting trust and privacy.

Research and product work

  • Research, develop, and deploy language intelligence for communication experiences.
  • Adapt LLMs to understand intent, context, and entities such as people, contacts, events, dates, and topics.
  • Apply instruction tuning, in-context learning, and structured generation to NLP and named entity recognition tasks.
  • Build agents that reason across multi-turn conversations and support summarization, smart replies, coreference, and context resolution.
  • Fine-tune, align, and optimize foundation models for informal text, code-switching, misspellings, transcribed speech, and multilingual content.
  • Ground responses in customer context through retrieval-augmented generation and personalization.
  • Move models from research to scaled production with engineering and product teams.
  • Evaluate quality, faithfulness, latency, and customer impact while keeping trust and privacy central.

Basic qualifications

  • PhD, or master's degree plus 4 or more years building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business applications.
  • At least 2 years of programming in Java, C++, Python, or a related language.
  • Experience building and deploying production NLP models, such as named entity recognition, entity linking, intent detection, or language understanding.

Preferred qualifications

  • PhD in computer science, machine learning, engineering, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of standard speech and machine learning techniques.
  • Experience building speech recognition, machine translation, or natural language processing systems.
  • Experience applying LLMs to NLP, including instruction tuning, in-context learning, or retrieval-augmented generation.
  • Experience with conversational AI, dialogue systems, or communication and messaging applications.
  • Experience with multilingual NLP, coreference resolution, summarization, or noisy real-world text.

Compensation

  • Annual base salary range is CAD 149,300 to 249,300 for Vancouver, British Columbia, and Toronto, Ontario.
  • Total compensation may include sign-on payments and restricted stock units; final compensation depends on experience, qualifications, and location.
