An Animal Keeper is responsible for the daily care, feeding, health monitoring, and welfare of animals in zoos, wildlife parks, sanctuaries, rehabilitation centers, or conservation facilities.
The role involves maintaining clean and safe enclosures, observing animal behavior, assisting veterinary staff, and educating visitors about animals and conservation.
Key Responsibilities
- Feed animals according to approved diets and schedules.
- Clean and maintain animal enclosures, exhibits, and holding areas.
- Monitor animal health, behavior, and welfare; report any abnormalities.
- Assist with administering medication and treatments under veterinary supervision.
- Prepare and distribute food, water, and enrichment items.
- Maintain accurate daily records of feeding, health observations, and animal activities.
- Assist with animal handling, restraint, transport, and transfers when required.
- Ensure compliance with animal welfare, health, and safety regulations.
- Participate in educational talks, tours, demonstrations, and visitor interactions.
- Support breeding, conservation, and research programs where applicable.
Requirements
- Previous experience working with animals is advantageous.
- Knowledge of animal behavior, husbandry, and welfare practices.
- Good physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work weekends, public holidays, and shift schedules.
- Strong observation, communication, and teamwork skills.
