About 30th Street Animal Hospital

30th Street Animal Hospital is a well-established, progressive small-animal general practice that has proudly served the East Indianapolis and Lawrence communities for decades. With a 4.8-star reputation and a Neighborhood Clinic Choice Award, we've built lasting relationships with generations of pet owners who trust us with their companions.

Our philosophy is simple: Provide gold-standard medical recommendations while recognizing that every pet and family has different needs. We believe in open communication, individualized treatment plans, and helping clients make informed decisions that balance medical recommendations with practical financial considerations.

Our hospital combines the personal feel of a community veterinary practice with the equipment and resources of a modern medical facility. Our approximately 6,000-square-foot hospital features six exam rooms, a large surgical suite, separate canine and feline treatment areas, and dedicated spaces for diagnostics, isolation, and recovery.

Our medical capabilities include:

Preventive medicine, wellness care, and chronic disease management

Internal medicine, dermatology, and endocrine disease management

Comprehensive dentistry, including digital dental radiography and extractions

Soft tissue surgery, including spays/neuters, mass removals, foreign body procedures, pyometras, and cystotomies

Digital radiography, abdominal ultrasound, and in-house IDEXX diagnostics

Therapeutic laser, EKG, and advanced anesthesia monitoring

Visiting cardiology services for echocardiograms twice monthly

Daytime urgent care and sick-patient management

We maintain strong relationships with nearby emergency and specialty hospitals, including IndyVet and NOAHS, ensuring patients have access to additional care when needed.

Our doctors typically see approximately 15 patients daily in 30-minute appointments, with a dedicated midday block from 12:00–2:00 PM for lunch, callbacks, charting, ultrasounds, minor procedures, and other clinical responsibilities. This structure creates opportunities for thoughtful medicine, case discussions, and continued learning throughout the day.

Culture, Team & Fit

What truly makes 30th Street Animal Hospital special isn't just our facility or equipment. It's the people who make up our team.

We're a close-knit, compassionate group that genuinely cares about our patients, our clients, and one another. We believe exceptional veterinary medicine starts with strong relationships, open communication, and a willingness to work together.

Our doctors collaborate on cases, share ideas, and support each other's professional development. With daily team huddles, weekly doctor meetings, and regular all-staff discussions, communication and teamwork are part of our everyday culture.

We also believe the little things matter. Our team follows up with clients after their pets' visits, sends thoughtful sympathy and support cards during difficult times, and works hard to make every client feel heard, respected, and cared for.

We celebrate team accomplishments, recognize individual contributions, and make time for staff appreciation events and activities. Most importantly, we strive to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable asking questions, offering ideas, and learning from one another.

We're looking for someone who values teamwork, enjoys building lasting client relationships, and believes that great medicine and genuine compassion go hand in hand.

Whether you're a new graduate looking for guidance or an experienced veterinarian hoping to share your expertise while continuing to grow, you'll find a team that wants you to succeed.

Mentorship & Growth

For New Graduates: Real Mentorship, a Clear Plan, and a Team Invested in Your Success

Starting your veterinary career should be exciting, not overwhelming. At 30th Street Animal Hospital, we understand that developing clinical confidence takes time, experience, and the right support.

That's why we've developed a structured, individualized first-year mentorship program designed to help new graduates transition into practice at a comfortable, progressive pace.

You'll work alongside experienced veterinarians, including Dr. Sam Smith and Dr. Claudia Samland, who are committed to helping you strengthen your medical knowledge, develop surgical skills, and build confidence in your clinical decisions.

Your mentorship experience includes:

A gradual introduction to appointments. Begin by shadowing experienced doctors and seeing straightforward wellness and sick-patient appointments. You'll start with extended appointment times, typically around 60 minutes, before gradually transitioning to 45- and 30-minute visits as your confidence and efficiency develop.

Hands-on medical mentorship. Work alongside experienced veterinarians to discuss cases, interpret diagnostics, formulate treatment plans, and strengthen your clinical decision-making skills.

Side-by-side surgical and dental training. Begin by observing and assisting with procedures before progressing to hands-on experience with direct supervision. Build confidence in spays, neuters, mass removals, dental procedures, and other surgeries based on your experience and interests.

Regular mentorship meetings and feedback. Participate in dedicated mentor check-ins, case reviews, and formal 30-, 60-, and 90-day progress evaluations to celebrate accomplishments, identify learning opportunities, and establish goals.

Progressive clinical independence. Gradually expand your appointment schedule, medical caseload, and procedural responsibilities with experienced doctors available to provide guidance and assistance.

Opportunities to develop advanced skills. Gain exposure to abdominal ultrasound, diagnostic imaging, cytology, dental extractions, anesthesia, and more as you continue building your clinical foundation.

Ongoing education and collaboration. Participate in weekly DVM case discussions, lunch-and-learns, continuing education opportunities, VPP Academy, and veterinary peer groups.

Support beyond your first 90 days. Mentorship continues throughout your first year, with ongoing clinical discussions, professional development opportunities, and a personalized growth plan.

Our goal isn't to rush you into independence. It's to give you the tools, experience, guidance, and confidence to become the veterinarian you want to be.

For Experienced Veterinarians: Autonomy, Collaboration & Career Growth

If you're an experienced DVM, we recognize the expertise and perspective you bring to the table.

You'll have the opportunity to practice with clinical autonomy while working alongside colleagues who enjoy sharing ideas and discussing cases. Whether your interests are in surgery, dentistry, internal medicine, diagnostics, or another area of general practice, we want to support the work you enjoy most.

Experienced veterinarians can also help shape hospital protocols, contribute to clinical discussions, mentor newer doctors if interested, and explore future leadership or partnership opportunities.

Through VPP, you'll have access to additional professional development and leadership resources while remaining part of a hospital that values individualized medicine and local decision-making.

Whether you're beginning your career or looking for your next long-term professional home, we're committed to helping you grow on your own terms.
