Trainee - Pilot

Role overview

Responsibilities

• Assist with piloting vessels in and out of port and through restricted waterways under supervision.
• Support use of navigational charts, electronic charts, and other aids to assess vessel condition and routing readiness.
• Participate in pre-pilotage briefings and post-pilotage debriefings.
• Report navigational risks, hazards, and incidents to senior pilots and the Pilotage Manager.
• Assist in implementing risk mitigation measures.
• Stay informed about port conditions, navigational updates, and pilotage best practices.
• Comply with maritime regulations, port procedures, and safety protocols.
• Participate in pilotage training and competency development.

Qualifications

• Diploma in Nautical Science (Applied Science), Marine Studies, or equivalent; a bachelor’s degree is a plus.
• Unlimited COC is essential.
• Excellent English; Arabic is an added advantage.
• At least 2 years of sea time as a Junior or Second Officer.
• Significant marine officer experience and strong local waters knowledge.
• Extensive navigation and seamanship knowledge.
• Proficiency in Microsoft applications; advanced Excel knowledge is an asset.
• Strategic perspective, cultural sensitivity, adaptability, problem solving, critical thinking, and data-driven decision-making.
