Overview

SPM Shipping — a leading ship-owning company based in Dubai — is hiring a Technical Superintendent to join our technical team.

This role blends office-based fleet oversight with field operations to ensure the safe, efficient and regulatory-compliant operation of our vessels.

International travel for drydocks, inspections and emergency response is required.

  • What you’ll do
  • Oversee fleet technical operations and performance, working closely with Technical Managers and Superintendents.
  • Ensure full compliance with Class, Flag State and Port State requirements; prepare vessels for PSC, SIRE and RightShip inspections.
  • Conduct owner-perspective vessel inspections and onboard technical inspections (pre-purchase, VIR, drydock prep).
  • Approve procurement for spare parts and services; monitor OPEX and control maintenance costs.
  • Supervise drydock and major repairs internationally to ensure timely, safe and cost-effective execution.
  • Coordinate service engineers, contractors and insurance/settlement processes with the Fleet Manager.
  • Lead emergency response and breakdown management with minimal operational disruption.
  • Review monthly technical reports, maintain KPIs and provide performance recommendations.
  • Participate in recruitment for vessel management roles as needed.
  • Minimum requirements (essential)
  • Fresh or 1–2 years shore-based superintendent experience in a shipping company.
  • Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency (CoC) with at least 6 months’ sailing experience at the rank.
  • Experience on oil/chemical tankers.
  • Familiarity with Classification Society and Flag State processes.
  • Excellent English (written & verbal).
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage priorities, and travel internationally for drydocks/inspections.
  • Strong leadership and team-management skills.
  • Desirable (preferred)
  • Experience with gas carriers.
  • Postgraduate qualification in management or related field will be added benefit.
  • Familiarity with ME-C, ME-B, RT-FLEX, Dual-Fuel engines and modern fleet systems.
  • Strong analytical skills for KPI/report assessment.
