Join the AIR6500 program as the Systems Design Team Lead and help shape the future of Australia's integrated air and missile defence capability.

AIR6500 is delivering the Joint Air Battle Management System (JABMS), a complex System-of-Systems capability that will connect sensors, communications, battle management and command-and-control systems across multiple operational domains. As the Systems Design Team Lead, you will combine deep technical systems engineering expertise with team leadership responsibilities, guiding the development of system designs that underpin this nationally significant capability.

Working closely with Product Teams, Subject Matter Experts, architects, engineers and Defence stakeholders, you will lead systems design activities, drive technical decision-making and ensure design solutions are delivered with the quality, maturity and rigour required for a complex Defence program. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced systems engineer who enjoys leading technical teams, influencing capability development and solving challenging engineering problems.

Key responsibilities

  • The Systems Design Team Lead's primary responsibilities include:
  • Lead a team of Systems Engineers responsible for developing system and subsystem requirements, architectures and designs within a Model-Based Engineering environment
  • Drive design trade studies, technical assessments and key engineering decisions to ensure solutions meet program requirements and objectives
  • Lead the preparation and execution of system and subsystem design reviews, ensuring design artefacts are delivered to the required level of maturity
  • Define, plan and estimate engineering scope for Program Increment (PI) activities while supporting Agile delivery objectives
  • Collaborate with Product Teams, SMEs, subcontractors and engineering disciplines to develop integrated technical solutions
  • Provide technical leadership, resource coordination and engineering management support across cost, schedule and delivery activities

What you’ll bring

To be successful in this role you will have:

Extensive Systems Engineering experience delivering complex Defence, C4ISREW, communications or other large-scale integrated systems

Strong experience leading systems design activities, including requirements development, architecture, interface definition and integration planning

Excellent understanding of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), Model-Based Systems Development (MBSD) and associated tools such as MagicDraw, Cameo, Rhapsody or similar

Proven ability to lead technical teams, influence stakeholders and drive engineering outcomes in complex project environments

Strong experience conducting design trade studies and evaluating impacts across component, subsystem and system levels

Experience working within Agile delivery environments and using requirements management tools such as DOORS, DNG or equivalent
