Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Data Center Power Systems

The

DC Power Systems Expertise & Technical Leadership

• Act as the Subject Matter Expert and technical authority for all Data Center electrical power systems.
• Provide technical leadership on power architecture, topology, and system resilience strategies.
• Ensure implementation of redundancy models including N+1, 2N, and 2N+1 architectures.
• Verify alignment with hyperscale client standards and Uptime Institute Tier requirements.
• Support technical decision-making throughout project delivery and operational readiness phases.

Design Review & Engineering Validation

• Review and approve Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), electrical schematics, and detailed design packages.
• Validate load calculations, fault studies, protection coordination studies, and system selectivity analyses.
• Review UPS sizing calculations, battery autonomy assessments, and redundancy strategies.
• Ensure compliance with TIA-942, IEC, NFPA, IEEE, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Identify design risks, reliability concerns, and maintainability issues and drive corrective actions.

Power Infrastructure Oversight

• Oversee installation and integration of:
• HV/MV substations (11kV / 33kV)
• Transformers and GIS/AIS switchgear
• Static and modular UPS systems
• Battery systems (VRLA and Lithium-Ion)
• Diesel generators and fuel systems

• Busbar Trunking Systems (BBT)

• PDUs and Remote Power Panels (RPPs)
• Ensure proper implementation of dual power paths (A & B feeds).
• Validate concurrent maintainability and fault-tolerant infrastructure requirements.

Construction & Installation Support

• Monitor site execution to ensure compliance with approved designs, specifications, and quality standards.
• Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support during installation activities.
• Coordinate with contractors, vendors, consultants, and QA/QC teams to resolve technical issues.
• Review technical submittals, method statements, inspection requests, and construction documentation.

Testing & Commissioning

• Lead and oversee:

• Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)

• Pre-functional Testing

• Functional Performance Testing

• Participate in Integrated Systems Testing (IST).
• Support black building testing and power failure simulations.
• Validate:
• UPS transfer performance
• Generator synchronization and load sharing
• Automatic transfer sequences
• Failover and redundancy performance
• Ensure all critical systems achieve project performance requirements before handover.

Commissioning & Systems Integration

• Work closely with Commissioning Authorities (CxA) and Commissioning Managers (CxM).
• Review commissioning scripts, procedures, and test methodologies.
• Ensure proper execution of Level 1 through Level 5 commissioning processes.
• Support integrated commissioning and operational readiness programs.

Power Quality & Reliability Assurance

• Verify load balancing and phase distribution across electrical infrastructure.
• Review harmonic studies, power quality analysis, and power factor correction measures.
• Ensure compliance with grounding, bonding, and lightning protection requirements.
• Validate system availability and reliability targets required for Tier certification.

HSE & Risk Management

• Ensure safe execution of energization and high-voltage activities.
• Support Permit-to-Work (PTW) processes related to isolation, energization, and switching operations.
• Participate in risk assessments and mitigation planning.
• Drive a zero-incident culture during commissioning and live system testing.

Vendor & OEM Management

• Interface with major OEMs and vendors including:
• UPS Manufacturers
• Generator Suppliers
• Switchgear Manufacturers

• Power Monitoring System Providers

• Review vendor technical submissions, shop drawings, and datasheets.
• Witness factory testing activities and monitor manufacturing and delivery schedules.

Documentation & Handover

• Review and validate:
• As-built drawings

• Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)

• Commissioning Reports

• Electrical Settings Files

• Support development of O&M documentation and training materials.
• Facilitate client training and knowledge transfer activities.
• Ensure project readiness for Uptime Institute Tier Certification audits and client acceptance.

Qualifications & Experience

• **Years of Experience:**
• Minimum 12–18 years of experience in electrical power systems engineering.
• **Data Center Experience:**
• Minimum 7+ years in Data Center or Mission Critical environments.
• **Education:**
• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (Mandatory).
• Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline is preferred.
• Proven experience supporting hyperscale Data Center projects exceeding 20MW IT load.
• Experience working within Tier III and Tier IV Data Center environments.
• Strong background in electrical commissioning, systems integration, and operational readiness.
• Demonstrated experience managing complex mission-critical power infrastructure projects.
