Role summary
Staff Software Engineer on the Replication Foundations team within Temporal Cloud Global Services.
The team owns and evolves Temporal OSS replication, underpinning High Availability namespaces, cross-cluster and cross-region failover, and workload migration.
The role leads technical direction for correctness-critical replication systems supporting Temporal OSS and Temporal Cloud.
Responsibilities
- Evolve replication architecture from problem definition through rollout and operational support.
- Design protocols for High Availability namespaces, cross-cluster and cross-region replication, and cluster migration.
- Drive scalability and reliability work, including multi-cell namespaces, multi-cluster namespaces, load distribution, and hot-spot handling.
- Define guarantees for consistency, ordering, idempotency, failure recovery, performance, and operations.
- Shape the technical roadmap and align replication foundations with product and customer needs.
- Lead design reviews, improve implementation and testing practices, mentor engineers, and provide technical guidance.
- Debug production issues, respond to incidents, and deliver follow-up improvements.
What you'll bring
- Track record delivering complex production distributed systems where correctness, availability, and performance matter.
- Deep understanding of replication, partitioning, consistency, fault tolerance, durability, concurrency, and failure recovery.
- Experience defining architecture, protocol behavior, invariants, and trade-offs.
- Production debugging experience with concurrency bugs, inconsistent data, partial failures, and performance bottlenecks.
- Proficiency in production-quality concurrent Go; Java, C++, or similar systems languages are welcome.
- Strong communication, cross-team influence, alignment-building, and mentoring abilities.
- Curiosity about system behavior under load, failure, and changing workload conditions.
Preferred experience
- Replication protocols, data-plane infrastructure, multi-cluster or multi-region systems, including active-active or active-passive architectures.
- Database internals, log-based replication, event-sourced systems, or contributions to large open-source projects or distributed-systems infrastructure.
Compensation
- Compensation range: $169,600–$278,250 per year.
