Job Summary
The Staff Nurse is responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care using the nursing process (Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation).
The role requires clinical expertise, critical thinking, and compassion to manage a designated group of patients.
The Staff Nurse collaborates with physicians, families, and interdisciplinary teams to promote health, prevent disease, and achieve optimal patient outcomes.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Care
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments (physical, psychological, social, and spiritual) upon admission and throughout the shift.
- Develop, implement, and update individualized care plans based on patient needs, diagnosis, and physician orders.
- Administer medications, IV therapy, blood products, and treatments according to established protocols and safety standards (e.g., "five rights" of medication administration).
- Monitor and interpret patient vital signs, lab results, and diagnostic data; intervene appropriately in acute or emergency situations.
- Perform wound care, dressing changes, suctioning, catheterization, and other technical nursing procedures.
- Assist physicians with bedside procedures (e.g., central line insertion, lumbar punctures, intubation).
- Operate and monitor medical equipment (ventilators, cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, etc.).
Patient & Family Education
- Educate patients and families on disease processes, treatment plans, medications, discharge instructions, and post-hospital care (e.g., diabetes management, fall prevention, medication adherence).
- Assess learning barriers (language, cognitive ability, literacy) and adapt teaching accordingly.
Communication & Collaboration
- Document all nursing interventions, assessments, and patient responses accurately and timely in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Provide clear, concise handoff reports during shift changes and patient transfers.
- Communicate critical lab values, changes in patient status, or safety concerns to physicians and appropriate team members.
- Collaborate with case managers, social workers, physical therapists, and dietitians to coordinate discharge planning and continuity of care.
Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to infection control protocols (hand hygiene, isolation precautions, sterile technique).
- Follow hospital policies, state Nurse Practice Act, and regulatory standards (Joint Commission, OSHA, HIPAA).
- Identify and report near-misses, adverse events, or patient safety issues using the facility’s reporting system.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials and medications.
Professional Development & Leadership
- Act as a preceptor or mentor to new graduates, nursing students, or unlicensed assistive personnel (CNAs, LPNs).
- Participate in unit-based committees, quality improvement projects, or nursing research.
- Maintain required certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS, etc.) and complete annual competency training.
QualificationsEducation
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program. *Note: BSN preferred or required for Magnet hospitals.*
Licensure & Certifications
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in [State Name].
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA or Red Cross).
- Additional certifications required for specific units (e.g., ACLS for ICU/ER, PALS for Pediatrics, NRP for NICU, TNCC for Trauma).
Experience
- **1** years of nursing experience preferred (e.g., New graduates welcome, 1+ year, or 3+ years for specialized units).
- Prior experience in [specific unit or setting] is highly desirable.
Skills & Competencies
- **Clinical Judgment:** Ability to prioritize care for multiple patients with complex conditions.
- **Communication:** Excellent verbal and written skills; ability to de-escalate conflicts and provide empathetic support.
- **Technical Proficiency:** Experience with EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Meditech) and common medical devices.
- **Physical Stamina:** Able to stand, walk, lift, turn, and transfer patients for 8-12 hour shifts; ability to push/pull up to 35 lbs.
- **Critical Thinking:** Rapid assessment, problem-solving, and decision-making under pressure.
