Role overview

Set technical direction across engineering and shape how software is designed, validated, and delivered at scale.

The role is on the Engineering Scale track, alongside rather than above the Management track; it does not assign work to engineers.

Report to the VP of Engineering and lead the Architecture Working Group's agenda and roadmap.

What you'll do

  • Own specialist-domain architecture and the patterns and frameworks other teams build on.
  • Simplify complex systems through clear boundaries between well-defined components.
  • Tackle difficult technical problems hands-on and contribute to design reviews and planning.
  • Use evidence to challenge existing approaches and retire those that no longer serve the business.
  • Mentor engineers across teams and raise engineering quality through reviews, standards, and coaching.
  • Partner with Product and customer-facing teams on business goals and platform needs.
  • Lead planning and roadmap work at Quarterly Lab Days in quarters without ChargeFest.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated innovation that measurably accelerated a technology organization, beyond shipping features.
  • Extensive Senior- or Staff-level engineering experience architecting and delivering complex systems at scale.
  • Deep expertise in distributed, event-driven systems and trade-offs among simplicity, scalability, and cost.
  • Hands-on ability to build and validate difficult system components and remain credible in the code.
  • Experience influencing technical direction without direct authority and mentoring engineers across teams.
  • Experience with OCPP, OCPI, ISO 15118, or similar interoperability standards, or strong ability to learn them quickly.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including actionable design documents.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Physics, or a related field.
  • B2B SaaS or IoT platform experience is strongly preferred; AWS experience is preferred.

Hybrid work

  • Engineering team members work from the office on Mondays and Thursdays and work from home the rest of the week.
  • The company holds an annual three-day onsite in Toronto; remote team members travel in. Quarterly Lab Days are held in the other three quarters.
