Responsibilities
- Own backend work in the core Symfony application and work independently after an initial ramp-up of 2–3 months.
- Review team and AI-generated code; support the Symfony 6.1-to-7 upgrade and resolve compatibility and legacy issues.
- Improve performance, scalability, and maintainability; deliver thoughtful solutions in a legacy codebase.
- Work across Angular, TypeScript, and Python AI services, considering system-wide effects and collaborating with DevOps.
- Question existing approaches, identify root causes, and maintain consistent delivery while working autonomously with the remote team.
- Follow SOC 2, PII, and security requirements.
Requirements
- 8+ years of commercial software engineering, including at least 5 years with PHP; 7+ years of expert-level PHP development.
- 3+ years of recent advanced Symfony 6.x/7 experience; qualifying senior Laravel experience may be considered as an alternative.
- 4+ years in backend architecture, system design, and scalability; 2+ years critically using AI development tools.
- 5+ years of advanced MySQL including schema design and query optimization; equivalent relational database experience may be considered.
- At least 1 year of Angular/TypeScript exposure; React or Vue with TypeScript may be considered, but frontend exposure is essential.
- 3+ years of PHPUnit-based automated testing; equivalent PHP testing frameworks may be considered.
- At least 1 year upgrading frameworks or modernizing legacy code; comparable experience may be considered.
- 2+ years of AWS; Azure or GCP may be considered as equivalents.
- Fluent written and spoken English, strong communication, remote-work effectiveness, and ability to work UK hours.
- Pass strict background checks, follow PII and data protection requirements, and work independently after 2–3 months while collaborating effectively.
- Bring a hands-on engineering approach and architectural mindset.
Nice to have
- 2+ years of CI/CD with GitHub Actions; GitLab CI, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps are alternatives.
- Basic Amazon Redshift or data warehousing experience; Snowflake or BigQuery may be considered.
- Azure exposure alongside AWS, previous project leadership, or experience mentoring and technically leading engineers.
