Role and product

Amazon LEO aims to expand global broadband access through a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites.

Leo Asset Tracker is an internal application that provides real-time visibility into physical assets across facilities, including antennas, test equipment, and Hubble trackers.

The application manages devices, live location and geofencing, calibration, transfers, and audit trails, replacing spreadsheets and manual audits.

The backend uses Python Lambda, DynamoDB, OpenSearch, and a TypeScript AWS CDK package for infrastructure and CI/CD. The engineer will own and extend APIs, data models, and infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate Python Lambda API domains and event-driven workers using the established domain layer pattern.
  • Own DynamoDB data modeling and OpenSearch indexing, including keys, GSIs, and cursor-paginated queries.
  • Extend V3 RBAC and per-program authorization; use centralized permission predicates to protect endpoints.
  • Manage IAM roles, policies, Bindle-based access controls, and permission boundaries for least privilege.
  • Wire backend changes through TypeScript CDK, including Lambda, IAM, environment variables, API Gateway, and pipeline stages.
  • Lead and participate in security reviews across infrastructure and application layers.
  • Write unit and integration tests, uphold code quality standards, and participate in code reviews.
  • Support deployment stages, monitoring, and on-call operations.
  • Collaborate with frontend and infrastructure partners on location tracking, geofencing, and device transfers.

Basic qualifications

  • 7+ years of non-internship professional software development experience and 7+ years programming with at least one language.
  • 5+ years leading design or architecture of new and existing systems, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling.
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or engineering team lead.
  • Experience with Python and building and operating production backend services.
  • Experience with AWS Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, and IAM.
  • Experience designing REST APIs and data models and writing automated tests.
  • Experience writing clean, documented, maintainable code and reasoning about security and access control.

Preferred qualifications

  • Preferred: 7+ years across the software development lifecycle, including standards, reviews, source control, builds, testing, and operations.
  • Preferred: master's degree in computer science or equivalent.
  • Preferred: 1+ years of CI/CD experience or AWS Professional-level certification.
  • Preferred: aws-lambda-powertools, pydantic, boto3, OpenSearch/Elasticsearch, and NoSQL data modeling.
  • Preferred: familiarity with role-based access control and multi-tenant or program-scoped authorization.
  • Preferred: Amazon internal build and deployment systems, including Brazil, Apollo, Pipelines, and CRUX.

Compensation

  • The posted annual base salary range for Redmond, Washington is $168,100–$227,400 USD.
  • The package may include sign-on payments and restricted stock units; final compensation depends on experience, qualifications, and location.

Export control

  • Candidates must meet the stated U.S. export-control eligibility criteria: U.S. citizen or national, permanent resident, refugee, or granted asylum.
