Job Purpose

The SENCO is responsible for leading and coordinating the provision for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), ensuring that all learners receive appropriate support to achieve their full academic, social, and emotional potential.

The role involves working closely with teachers, parents, support staff, and external agencies to promote an inclusive learning environment and ensure compliance with relevant educational regulations and best practices.

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop, implement, and regularly review the school's SEND policy and inclusion strategy.
  • Promote a whole-school culture of inclusion and equal access to learning opportunities.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of SEND provision and recommend improvements where necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with local and international SEND regulations and standards.

Student Identification and Support

  • Coordinate the identification, assessment, and monitoring of students with special educational needs.
  • Maintain accurate SEND records, student profiles, and intervention plans.
  • Develop and oversee Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Learning Support Plans, and intervention programs.
  • Track student progress and evaluate the impact of support strategies.
  • Collaboration and Communication
  • Work closely with teachers to ensure appropriate differentiation and accommodations within the classroom.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and professional development to staff regarding SEND practices.
  • Liaise regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and support plans.
  • Coordinate services with external professionals, including educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and healthcare providers.

Student Wellbeing and Inclusion

  • Advocate for the needs of students with SEND across the school community.
  • Support transitions between grade levels and educational settings.
  • Promote student independence, confidence, and participation in school life.
  • Assist in developing inclusive teaching and assessment practices.
  • Monitoring and Reporting
  • Analyze SEND data and prepare reports for school leadership.
  • Monitor the implementation of interventions and support services.
  • Ensure all documentation and records remain confidential and up to date.
  • Contribute to school improvement planning related to inclusion and student support.
