About The Role

Join us as a Software Engineer and play a key role in developing and improving the SAP system that supports Arco’s business. We run SAP ECC 6, a mature, well-established system that underpins many of our business operations. Alongside ABAP development, you’ll gain hands-on experience in SAP configuration, functional processes and some Basis activities, with specialist support from third-party partners for much of the Basis work. Over time, you’ll become a go-to person for understanding how our SAP landscape works and how it supports the wider business. This role is about getting the most from our existing SAP ECC system, rather than migrating to S/4HANA or adopting the latest SAP cloud technologies. If you have ABAP development experience and want to broaden your functional and configuration skills, you’ll have the opportunity to take ownership, build expertise across the SAP landscape and learn alongside a supportive team. You don’t need to be a functional expert already – just curious, adaptable and keen to develop. This is a full-time, permanent opportunity, available on a fully remote or hybrid basis. If you prefer hybrid working, our head office is in Hull. Key responsibilities include:

Developing, enhancing and maintaining ABAP solutions (reports, interfaces, enhancements and forms) to meet business requirements

Working with our business analysts and business users to understand their processes and requirements, and turning them into configuration or development changes

Making configuration changes in ECC 6 across a range of modules to support the needs of the business.

Building up, and sharing, an understanding of how our business processes fit together and how our systems support this.

Investigating and resolving second-line support issues raised through the IT service desk

Working with our third-party support and Basis partners and filling in gaps in Basis and functional needs.

Working within a small but supportive technical change team using Agile ways of working

Writing and maintaining unit tests, and supporting system integration and user acceptance testing with the business

Owning your changes from estimate through to release, and giving honest estimates with a stated degree of confidence

Documenting changes and system knowledge

Sharing knowledge with colleagues and helping to train users where needed

You may also have opportunities to work on SAP Integrated Business Planning (IBP), SAP Cloud for Customer (C4C) and Cloud Application Studio (CAS) development, though these are not currently central to the role.

On top of working for the UK’s leading integrated health and safety experts, you’ll also receive:

Competitive starting salary plus bonus

Up to 8% Arco Pension contributions and Life Assurance worth 4 times your salary

32 days holiday inclusive of bank holidays plus 2 fully paid Community Volunteering days every year

Opportunity to purchase 5 additional days annual leave each calendar year (subject to qualifying salary)

Access to hundreds of discounts through Perkbox, plus receive employee discount on Arco products

Health Cash Plan that allows you to reclaim costs for everyday health expenses such as dental treatment, eye tests and physiotherapy

Access learning resources, qualifications and development opportunities to help you grow, progress and achieve your career ambitions

Long-term service awards – we’re proud to have employees who have worked for us for 40 year

The ideal Software Engineer will be/have:

Strong ABAP development experience in an SAP ECC environment

A good understanding of object-oriented programming (ABAP Objects) and software design principles

An understanding of core SAP functional concepts and how modules integrate, ideally with experience in one or more modules, such as SD or MM

Good problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate and understand a mature, established system

The ability to explain technical issues clearly to non-technical colleagues

A degree in computer science or a related subject, or equivalent experience developing business applications

Exposure to SAP Basis activities, such as transports, job scheduling or user administration

The following experience would be an advantage, but is not essential:

SAP C4C or CAS development using ABSL

SAP Integrated Business Planning

Agile ways of working and tools such as Jira
