Software Engineer (Product - Backend)

About the role

What you will do

• Design, build, and ship backend systems, including a context graph and metric engine where formula accuracy matters.
• Own full slices of work, including front end and data visualization when a feature requires them, with human review proportionate to risk.
• Shape technical and business solutions with designers, engineers, and GTM teammates through the Shape Up process.
• Turn intent and design into context for Claude to implement, instrument releases, and follow adoption with the team.
• Build secure services for customer revenue data and own infrastructure and security for components you build, with DevOps tools and guidance.
• Build backend harnesses and blueprints that guide AI-assisted coding toward team standards.
• Own production incidents, fix issues, and communicate quickly and transparently to protect reliability.

What Vasco is looking for

• At least four years building customer-facing systems, with technical decisions tied to customer problems.
• Experience designing, building, and operating production backend services and complete systems.
• Comfort with data-heavy infrastructure products.
• GCP, BigQuery, Node.js, TypeScript, Terraform, or equivalent cloud-stack experience is ideal.
• Use AI coding tools centrally, take responsibility for shipped output, and build checks that provide evidence of quality.
• Experience making consequential technical decisions and ability to explain the reasoning.
• Communicate technical trade-offs as business impact for audiences from developers to cofounders.
• Collaborate well, bring people into work, and contribute to team culture.

Standout experience

• Production services in Rust or Go are under consideration alongside TypeScript and Node.js for high-performance, type-safe workloads.
• Production data or context layers for AI agents, including context graph architectures, are a differentiator.
• Data engineering (SQL, data modeling, pipelines) or DevOps (infrastructure, CI/CD, observability) range is a differentiator.
• Semantic layers, BI tools such as Cube, and precision with formulas and metrics are differentiators.

Work location

• Hybrid in Montreal, with three in-person days per week: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, at WeWork Place Ville-Marie downtown.
