About CommonAI

CommonAI CIC is a non-profit collaborative engineering organisation backed by UK Government and private funding to design, build and deploy AI systems.

The Scaling Inference Lab develops simulations grounded in real measurements to assess AI infrastructure designs and workloads.

The opportunity

Make uncertainty a first-class output of an AI systems simulator and help users understand the confidence supported by evidence.

Combine mathematical reasoning and practical software engineering to calibrate models, test predictions independently and build uncertainty analysis into simulation workflows.

Relevant backgrounds may include AI systems, HPC, simulation tested against experiments, systems engineering, mathematical modelling or scientific computing.

What you will do

  • Calibrate simulator models against measurements and evaluate predictions on cases not used for calibration.
  • Represent uncertainty from measurements, assumptions, parameters, operational variation and limited simulation runs.
  • Analyse uncertainty in comparisons, including shared sources, and show when rankings could change or results exceed validation evidence.
  • Design experiments with measurement and workload engineers to test assumptions and reduce decision-relevant uncertainty.
  • Integrate methods into repeatable workflows and explain assumptions and limitations to technical colleagues.
  • An early project may establish a calibration and validation workflow for comparing two architectures.

Requirements

  • Mathematical maturity and careful reasoning about models, data, variation and assumptions behind quantitative claims.
  • Software engineering experience building readable, tested and reusable numerical or analytical tools.
  • Relevant experience in one or more of quantitative systems performance analysis, statistical modelling, simulation validation, uncertainty quantification, scientific/HPC software or experimental design theory.
  • Ability to collaborate with specialists and explain both results and evidence limitations.
  • Practical experience using AI coding agents and checking their output.
  • Model discrepancy, sensitivity analysis, Bayesian methods, surrogate models, sequential experimental design, computer architecture or inference systems are useful additional experience or familiarity.

Working arrangement

  • Hybrid, with Cambridge attendance agreed individually around collaboration and the work; applicants across the UK are welcome.
  • An office is located a few minutes' walk from Cambridge train station.

Compensation

  • Competitive salary package, including pension and benefits; no compensation amount or cadence is specified.

Why join

  • Contribute to UK AI capability and improve how investment and compute serve the public good.
  • Build connections across hardware SMEs, technology companies, investors and universities.
  • Help shape a growing team with startup pace and academic links, using frontier models and coding agents with a substantial tooling budget.
  • Professional development and networking opportunities in a collaborative environment.

Employment arrangements

The description says the organisation is open to permanent employment, part-time arrangements and consultancy.
