About us

The UCL Cancer Institute is one of the world's leading cancer research centres, bringing together over 400 scientists and clinicians to drive discoveries that improve cancer diagnosis, treatment and patient outcomes. We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Technician (Pathology) to join Professor Gert Attard's internationally renowned Treatment Resistance Group. The team delivers world-leading translational research focused on understanding and overcoming treatment resistance in prostate cancer and plays a central role in major international clinical trials including STAMPEDE and STAMPEDE2. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research investigating mechanisms of resistance to radioligand therapy and the evolution of advanced prostate cancer. Working within a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, scientists, bioinformaticians and technical specialists, you will provide expert pathology support across a range of innovative translational research programmes.

About the role

You will provide specialist expertise in histopathology and tissue-based biomarker research, supporting the delivery of complex translational cancer research projects. Responsibilities will include:

Providing expert assessment and interpretation of prostate cancer histology and other tumour tissues.

Advising on tissue collection, processing, storage and utilisation for research studies.

Supporting pathology review and quality assessment of samples obtained through biopsy and post-mortem research programmes.

Developing, optimising and implementing pathology methodologies and technical workflows.

Supporting advanced technologies including digital pathology, multiplex imaging, spatial biology and AI-assisted image analysis.

Maintaining high standards of quality assurance, governance and regulatory compliance, including Human Tissue Act requirements.

Developing and maintaining SOPs, technical protocols and quality documentation.

Training and mentoring researchers, students and technical staff.

Contributing specialist expertise to scientific publications, presentations and grant applications.

About you

We are looking for a candidate with:

Essential

Extensive specialist knowledge of pathology and histopathology relevant to cancer research.

Experience in the histopathological assessment and interpretation of prostate tissue biopsies.

Experience working with human tissue samples and applying relevant UK governance and regulatory requirements.

Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), the Human Tissue Act (HTA) and clinical research requirements.

Experience producing and maintaining SOPs and technical documentation.

Strong organisational and project management skills.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

Experience training, mentoring and supporting researchers, students or technical staff.

A proactive, collaborative approach and enthusiasm for supporting world-class research.

Desirable

Experience applying artificial intelligence or machine learning approaches in pathology research.

Laboratory and/or computational experience involving spatial transcriptomics or spatial biology technologies.

What we offer
