About the company

Bells of Steel designs and manufactures strength and exercise equipment for home gym owners and fitness professionals.

The company emphasizes adaptability, customer centricity, and teamwork.

Role overview

Own the build and evidence for a training app and wearable research program.

Take an existing app to public launch and keep it running; design sensor and ML experiments and make technical decisions directly with the founder.

App public launch is planned for December 2026; sensor launch is planned by March 31, 2027.

What you will do

  • Operate the React Native/Expo and TypeScript app, Supabase/Postgres backend, and local-first data through release and ongoing monitoring.
  • Build reliable sync, access control, sensor ingestion, versioned datasets, model interfaces, and visible failure handling.
  • Design wearable measurement and ML experiments with trainers and biomechanical engineers, using comparisons, baselines, separated participant/session data, and uncertainty estimates.
  • Turn validated findings into coaching features with confidence checks, manual fallbacks, and appropriate behavior when signals are unreliable.
  • Set priorities, review AI-assisted code and analysis, and maintain reproducible decisions and experiment records.

Required qualifications

  • Has shipped production mobile apps and supported them after launch.
  • Has built and evaluated an applied ML system whose evaluation informed a product or deployment decision.
  • Strong backend, SQL, API, authorization, React, and TypeScript skills; able to own mobile releases and debug state, sync, and recovery.
  • Python, statistics, and applied ML fundamentals, including leakage, reference error, and calibration.
  • Has owned technical design and independent delivery decisions; typically 6+ years, with depth valued over a specific number.
  • Experience with iOS and Android development and BLE data capture.
  • Must live in Calgary or relocate before starting and attend onsite around three times per week.
  • Understands strength-training concepts and equipment, including sets, reps, RPE, progression, and rest periods; coaching certification is not needed.

Bonus experience

  • React Native/Expo and Supabase are listed as bonus points.
  • Wearable or time-series data, signal processing, and model deployment are listed as bonus points.

Schedule and location

  • Hybrid role based in Calgary, with core hours Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Expected onsite attendance is around three times weekly; remote work from another city or country will not work.

Contract and compensation

  • Six-month contract ending in March 2027, with potential transition to full-time based on performance and business needs.
  • Pay range is CAD 80,000–100,000 per year.
  • Benefits include a Health Spending Account, employee discounts on company gear, and access to a staff gym.

Success measures

Own the app release process within 90 days and have initial wearable experiments running with reproducible baselines.

Keep the app on track for its December public launch on Android, iOS, and web.

Base the March wearable decision on evidence rather than a demo.

Interview process

  • The process includes HR and hiring-team screens, a paid time-bound technical assessment, a follow-up discussion, and reference checks.
