Role Overview
FlightAware builds aviation software products and real-time flight-tracking services processing more than 180 million incoming messages per hour.
The Backend team develops systems powering FlightAware web, mobile, SaaS integration, account management, billing, and flight data services.
This onsite Houston role supports backend software for products used by industry partners and consumers.
What You Will Do
- Build new backend features from scratch through production.
- Build and scale streaming data feeds, databases, queueing systems, compute infrastructure, and analysis engines.
- Extend self-service account management and integrations with subscriptions, billing, and accounting systems.
- Ensure customer access is secure and correctly provisioned according to purchased products.
- Deliver cloud-native microservices supporting the website, mobile applications, data reporting, and other products.
- Write high-quality, well-tested code for customers including large airlines and airports.
Technology Exposure
- Work with technologies including Go, Rust, Python, Kubernetes, and AWS.
- Learn and apply cloud-native software development and delivery approaches.
- Develop impact through mentoring junior engineers and becoming a subject-matter resource.
Qualifications You Must Have
- STEM degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience, or a related advanced degree and at least 3 years of experience.
- Software engineering experience with Go, Rust, C++, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar technologies.
- Understanding of why clear API contracts are important in software engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
- Collaborative development experience with pair programming, Agile ceremonies, and peer code review.
- Cloud experience with AWS and Kubernetes.
- Microservice architecture experience, including service meshes, API contracts, queues, asynchronous workflows, or GraphQL.
- Large-scale SaaS experience with SQL, PostGIS, TimescaleDB, Redis, Dragonfly, or similar storage and caching tools.
- Experience integrating advertising networks, billing, or accounting systems.
- Knowledge of Flux, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Terraform, cybersecurity best practices, or secure software design.
- Private pilot experience, pursuit of a pilot license, or passion for aviation.

Compensation
- Salary range: 86,800 USD to 165,200 USD.
- Annual incentive compensation may be available depending on position level and collective-bargaining coverage; payments are not guaranteed.
