Role overview

The Senior Technical Project Manager joins the Project Management Office to drive next-generation high-temperature superconducting magnet systems.

The role covers complex first-of-a-kind R&D projects from concept and first-article prototypes through production ramp-up.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of small to mid-sized R&D projects and advise others on project management practices.
  • Serve as a technical liaison among executives, engineering teams, and external project stakeholders during scale-up.
  • Manage technical tradeoffs involving scalability, design for manufacturability, materials, coatings, and tolerancing.
  • Ensure appropriate project staffing and develop plans for scope, goals, deliverables, resources, and timelines.
  • Lead matrixed cross-functional teams and foster a collaborative, high-performance team culture.
  • Monitor schedules, identify delays, implement mitigation strategies, and manage and report project risks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in science, engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of technical experience and at least 5 years as a project manager leading new product integration.
  • Experience managing scope, requirements, schedules, risks, budgets, stakeholders, and communications.
  • Experience liaising with executive teams, engineering teams, and external suppliers.
  • Problem-solving, team mobilization, collaboration, decision-making, execution, and adaptable communication skills.

Bonus qualifications

  • PMP or equivalent project management certification is listed as a bonus qualification.
  • Experience with projects exceeding $10M and matrixed teams of 15+ people is a bonus.
  • Experience developing, fabricating, and testing large, complex prototypes or processes is a bonus.
  • Familiarity with fusion technology challenges, including cryogenics, vacuum, high-current electrical systems, or molten salts, is a bonus.

Workplace and working conditions

  • The posting identifies the position as onsite.
  • The role may require occasional travel, nights, weekends, or on-call work.
  • Work takes place in a facility with industrial hazards, including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.

Compensation and benefits

  • The full-time position offers a salary range of USD 140,000–200,000 yearly, plus equity and benefits.
  • Benefits include company holidays, flexible vacation, sick leave, parental leave, health, dental and vision insurance, employer-matched 401(k), professional growth opportunities, and team activities.

Additional conditions

  • Employment is contingent on compliance with U.S. export control laws concerning controlled or protected technologies and information.
