Role overview

Build and lead Northland's in-house gas commercial capability for its gas-fired fleet and new development.

Secure and optimize gas supply, transportation, and storage; originate and negotiate commodity and asset management agreements.

Capture value from existing gas assets within approved risk limits and represent Northland in commercial gas matters.

Workplace

  • The role requires working in the Toronto office four days per week, with one flexible work-from-home day.

Gas supply and procurement

  • Develop procurement strategies for operating gas-fired facilities that align with PPA requirements, dispatch profiles, and risk limits.
  • Originate, negotiate, and renew gas commodity, asset management, and agency agreements; run RFPs to select marketers and asset managers.
  • Manage firm and interruptible transportation, storage, and balancing contracts, including renewals, capacity decisions, and assignments.
  • Maintain relationships with marketers, pipelines, storage operators, and other counterparties.

Asset optimization and deal structuring

  • Value and optimize transportation, storage, and balancing positions, including unused capacity and locational or seasonal spreads.
  • Structure fixed-fee, profit-sharing, and indexed arrangements while managing price, counterparty, and operational risk.
  • Develop gas price and basis hedging strategies with Risk within approved limits.
  • Provide budget inputs and variance analysis; support market offer strategies with gas inputs.
  • Approve ad hoc trades within approved limits and support monthly volume forecasts and planned-outage coverage.

Development and growth support

  • Structure gas supply and transportation strategies for new gas-fired development and competitive RFP bids.
  • Provide gas cost, transportation, and commodity-risk input to business cases, term sheets, and tolling and PPA negotiations.
  • Assess pipeline expansions, open seasons, and capacity opportunities.
  • Work with development, engineering, and project teams on gas requirements, pipeline interconnection, capacity planning, and permitting.

Operations and governance

  • Coordinate nominations, balancing, and gas availability with dispatch and outage plans alongside site teams, Market Operations, and marketers.
  • Monitor fleet gas consumption and work with facility operations to reduce gas use and costs.
  • Establish gas management processes, controls, escalation protocols, off-hours coverage, and winter contingency plans.
  • Monitor market fundamentals, pipeline tolls, and tariffs; participate in tolls task forces and work with Regulatory Affairs on gas access and cost proceedings.
  • Maintain records of contractual entitlements and obligations and manage trading platform access with Risk.
  • Vet gas settlement checks, especially optimization revenues and asset management arrangements; resolve counterparty volume disputes while routine settlement processing remains with facilities.

Requirements

  • Build and lead Northland's in-house gas commercial capability.
  • Work within approved risk limits when managing gas commercial activity.
  • Provide gas expertise and represent the company in commercial matters with marketers, pipelines, and industry stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with development, engineering, project, risk, regulatory, operations, and market teams.
