Team and role

Key responsibilities

• Lead Fable's migration to Orion across data, features, training, serving, and experiments while keeping current recommendations running.
• Extend Orion rankers, feature store, and embedding-based retrieval to support Fable.
• Own production recommendation quality, latency, cost, and on-call health.
• Use Fable social signals, including shelves, ratings, reviews, book clubs, and reader similarity, to improve recommendations for Fable and Everand.
• Design and analyze A/B tests with product managers and analysts.
• Lead technically for Premium recommendations, shape the roadmap, and drive delivery across team dependencies.
• Raise engineering practice through design reviews, code quality, and operational readiness.

Technology

• Fable uses Python, FastAPI, Django, PostgreSQL, BigQuery, Kubernetes, Google Cloud, and Vertex AI.
• Orion and Everand technologies include Python, Go, gRPC, Ruby on Rails, Databricks, Spark, Airflow, AWS SageMaker, Weaviate, a feature store, and a model registry.
• Infrastructure technologies include AWS EKS, ECS, Lambda, SQS, ElastiCache, Datadog, and Terraform.

Must-have qualifications

• At least 5 years as a professional machine learning or software engineer, including a record of shipping production ML systems.
• Hands-on experience building and operating production recommender systems, with examples such as collaborative filtering, matrix factorization, two-tower or embedding retrieval, and learned ranking.
• Experience with large-scale data processing using Spark, Databricks, BigQuery, or similar.
• Experience on at least one major cloud, AWS or GCP, including containerized service deployment such as Kubernetes or ECS.
• Experience designing and analyzing online experiments.
• Experience leading projects involving other teams and working directly with product managers.
