Role overview

Canva is seeking a Senior Frontend Engineer for the Editing Accessibility team.

The role focuses on making the Canva Editor accessible to people using screen readers and other assistive technologies.

The work involves designing accessibility into complex, interconnected frontend systems and solving problems without established playbooks.

At the moment, this role is focused on

  • Designing and building accessible Editor interactions, including focus management, keyboard navigation, live regions, and accurate ARIA roles and states.
  • Using VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS as daily development tools to test, debug, and validate accessibility.
  • Reviewing designs and pull requests and providing technical guidance to teams across the Editing Group.
  • Finding systemic accessibility gaps and developing architectural solutions for recurring problems.
  • Working with assistive technology users during design and development and helping teams implement accessible features.

You’re probably a match if

  • You have solid commercial experience building accessible web applications and applying WCAG in practice.
  • You have hands-on experience developing with and debugging screen readers, including VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS.
  • You can work effectively in a large frontend codebase and understand how components, state, and rendering interact.
  • You have strong proficiency in TypeScript and React.
  • You communicate clearly with engineers, designers, product managers, and accessibility specialists.

It would be a plus if

  • You have experience with WAI-ARIA patterns for complex widgets such as trees, grids, drag-and-drop interactions, or dialogs.
  • You have built accessibility for real-time interfaces, HTML5 canvas, data visualisation, spreadsheets, or WYSIWYG editors.
  • You are familiar with browser and native accessibility APIs and the accessibility tree.
  • You have experience with AI-based accessibility features or mobile accessibility, including React Native.
  • You have worked with accessibility specialists, assistive technology users, or accessibility-focused researchers.

About the team

The Editing Accessibility team sits within Canva’s Design Experience supergroup and Editing Group.

The team works with engineers, designers, and product managers to improve accessibility in the Editor and make created designs accessible by default.

What’s in it for you

  • Canva offers equity packages, inclusive parental leave, an annual Vibe and Thrive allowance, and flexible leave options.

Other stuff to know

  • Interviews are conducted virtually.
