Role overview

Leads the engineering teams for Checkfront and Regiondo, established booking-management products used by tour, activity, and experience operators.

The products are mature and revenue-generating; the teams will continue product improvements while emphasizing stability, reliability, performance, maintainability, and operational confidence.

The player-coach role is accountable for team health, development, performance, and delivery, while staying technically close to systems and decisions without serving as the primary implementer.

Team leadership

  • Set expectations and create trust, accountability, and respectful collaboration across both teams.
  • Hold effective one-on-ones, give timely actionable feedback, support career growth, recognize performance, and address concerns.
  • Develop senior engineers and emerging leaders; monitor morale, workload, capacity, and team dynamics; participate in hiring and onboarding.

Delivery and operations

  • Partner with Product on priorities, sequencing, and delivery plans, and align teams on dependencies and competing priorities.
  • Balance product development with reliability, maintenance, testing, technical debt, performance, and long-term engineering health.
  • Surface risks and constraints early, clarify ownership, and hold teams accountable for appropriate quality.
  • Stay engaged in production incidents and escalations, understand customer impact, and support remediation.
  • Maintain accountability for stable, secure deployments and post-deployment observability.

Technical leadership

  • Maintain context on major systems, dependencies, risks, incidents, and operational characteristics across both products.
  • Participate in technical discussions, challenge assumptions, make pragmatic tradeoffs, and improve engineering practices.
  • Improve maintainability, observability, testing, reliability, and overall engineering quality while connecting investments to meaningful outcomes.
  • Stay close enough to team work to understand practical constraints and use evidence to evaluate changes to tools and practices.

What the role requires

  • Experience leading and developing software engineers in an Engineering Manager, Senior Engineering Manager, or comparable leadership role, across multiple teams and product areas.
  • People-management ability including coaching, feedback, career development, expectation setting, performance management, and development of senior engineers or technical leaders.
  • Operational experience with production incidents, observability, reliability, and learning from recurring failures.
  • Strong communication with Product, Support, leadership, and other stakeholders; create accountability without micromanagement.
  • Maintain ownership through problems until impact, responsibility, next steps, and resolution are clear.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with some of PHP, React, PostgreSQL, and Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience with customer-facing teams, AI-assisted development tools, booking, ecommerce, travel, tours and activities, or operationally complex domains.
  • Experience modernizing complex systems incrementally or improving test coverage, deployment automation, incident response, and production observability.

Compensation

  • Salary range is CAD $180,000–$220,000, depending on skills, experience, and overall qualifications.
