Role and impact
Join Xero's Search team to maintain and evolve a large search cluster serving over 200,000 daily active users and more than 50 million searchable documents.

The role includes search-specific and generalist engineering work, code reviews, and growing responsibility.
Current team projects
- Contribute to a four-year search platform modernisation project.
- Help maintain and evolve the search infrastructure at scale and support its 99.9% uptime.
- Work on integration of the Operational Data Layer ingestion pipeline with the new platform.
- Collaborate on integrations with Mobile, Files, and AI-adjacent search capabilities.
What the team is looking for
- Experience building or maintaining search systems and interest in deepening search engineering expertise.
- Solid software engineering fundamentals and ability to write clean, maintainable code.
- Collaborative approach across engineering, product, and infrastructure teams in a distributed environment.
- Initiative, ownership, eagerness to learn, and willingness to ask questions when support is needed.
Work arrangement
- Work remotely within Australia or New Zealand, or hybrid from one of the company's offices.
- The team meets in Melbourne approximately every six months for in-person collaboration; optional office boost days are available.
Team
The distributed team works across Melbourne, New South Wales, and New Zealand in Xero's Catalyst platform division.
The team collaborates with a Product Manager, Principal Architect, and the broader Catalyst Platform team.
