About This Role
Role Purpose
- The Radiology Registrar is a qualified medical professional in diagnostic radiology working under the direct clinical supervision of the Radiology Consultant.
- The role holder is responsible for performing and independently reporting diagnostic ultrasound examinations, and for producing supervised reports for plain radiography across a range of clinical indications.
- In addition to core reporting duties, the Registrar actively contributes to the clinical, operational, and educational functions of the Radiology Department, developing the comprehensive competencies required for independent consultant-level practice.
- 1. **Diagnostic Ultrasound Examination and Performance**
- Independently perform a comprehensive range of diagnostic ultrasound examinations, including abdominal, pelvic, obstetric, gynecological, in accordance with departmental protocols and referring physician requests.
- Verify patient identity and confirm the clinical indication and anatomical site of each examination prior to commencement, adhering to institutional patient safety and identification standards.
- Select the most clinically appropriate transducer, adjust equipment parameters — including frequency, gain, depth, and Doppler settings — and apply sound scanning technique to achieve optimal image quality for each examination type.
- Recognize incidental, unexpected, or clinically significant sonographic findings during the examination and escalate promptly to the supervising Radiology Consultant where findings exceed the Registrar's current scope of independent reporting.
- Perform targeted and follow-up ultrasound examinations as directed by the Radiology Consultant, contributing to the management of complex or multidisciplinary cases.
- Assist the Radiology Consultant during ultrasound-guided interventional procedures, including biopsies, aspirations, and drainages, progressively acquiring procedural competency under direct supervision.
- Participate in supervised review and interpretation exposure for CT and MRI examinations as approved within training scope.
- 2. **Ultrasound and Plain Radiograph Reporting.**
- Produce clear, concise, and clinically accurate written reports for diagnostic ultrasound examinations within the scope of the Registrar's current training level and as agreed with the supervising Radiology Consultant.
- Prepare preliminary reports for plain radiographic examinations — including chest, skeletal, abdominal, and emergency X-rays — for review, verification, and countersignature by the supervising Radiology Consultant prior to formal release.
- Communicate significant, urgent, or unexpected radiological findings to referring clinicians verbally in a timely manner, followed by formal written documentation, in strict compliance with the departmental critical results communication protocol.
- Participate in structured report review and feedback sessions with the supervising Radiology Consultant to identify reporting gaps, reinforce diagnostic accuracy, and progressively develop independent reporting competency.
- Transfer all finalized image sets and associated preliminary reports to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and Radiology Information System (RIS) accurately and without delay.
- Ensure all reports are documented in the electronic health record (EHR) in accordance with institutional medical records standards and relevant accreditation requirements.
- 3. **Clinical Quality and Safe Practice**
- Deliver safe, high-quality, and patient-centered clinical care in all diagnostic and reporting activities, adhering to evidence-based guidelines and departmental clinical protocols at all times.
- Participate actively in departmental quality assurance initiatives, clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and peer review processes, contributing constructively to the identification of improvement opportunities.
- Report all clinical incidents, adverse events, near-misses, and unexpected findings through the institutional incident reporting framework in a timely and transparent manner.
- Ensure full compliance with CBAHI, JCI, and other applicable accreditation standards as they relate to the Registrar's scope of clinical practice.
- Contribute to the development and periodic review of radiology reporting guidelines, examination protocols, and departmental standard operating procedures as directed by the Radiology Consultant.
- Maintain awareness of and adherence to all radiation safety regulations and institutional radiation protection policies applicable to diagnostic imaging activities.
- 4. **Multidisciplinary Collaboration and Clinical Communication**
- Participate actively in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, tumor boards, and clinical case conferences, providing well-reasoned radiological input and image review in support of integrated patient care planning.
- Maintain clear, professional, and timely communication with referring physicians, surgeons, and other clinical stakeholders regarding imaging findings, differential diagnoses, and recommendations for further investigation or management.
- Liaise effectively with radiology technicians, sonographers, and nursing staff to ensure smooth coordination of patient workflows, examination scheduling, and departmental operations.
- Support the Radiology Consultant in responding to urgent or out-of-hours imaging referrals, providing clinically appropriate preliminary interpretations within the approved scope of supervised practice.
- Build and sustain effective collaborative relationships with clinical teams across all departments, reinforcing the Radiology Department's role as a valued and accessible diagnostic partner.
- **5.** **T****raining, Specialty Development and Supervised Practice**
- Engage proactively and constructively in all aspects of the structured radiology training program, fulfilling the learning objectives and competency milestones agreed with the Radiology Consultant and the relevant training authority.
- Maintain a detailed and up-to-date portfolio of clinical experience, procedural log, and reflective practice documentation in accordance with specialty training requirements.
- Attend and contribute to departmental academic activities, including grand rounds, teaching sessions, journal clubs, case presentations, and radiology conferences.
- Engage in Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities and maintain compliance with all professional development requirements stipulated by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) and the relevant specialty board.
- Actively seek regular formative feedback from the supervising Radiology Consultant and incorporate learning points systematically into clinical practice.
- Contribute to the supervision and bedside teaching of medical students, junior doctors, and radiology technicians as appropriate to the Registrar's level of training and experience
- 6. **Professional Conduct, Governance and Patient Safety**
- Uphold the highest standards of medical ethics, professional integrity, and patient confidentiality in all clinical and administrative interactions.
- Operate strictly within the defined scope of supervised practice at all times, seeking timely guidance and escalation from the supervising Radiology Consultant for cases that exceed current competency boundaries.
- Comply fully with all institutional policies, clinical governance frameworks, and regulatory requirements applicable to a trainee medical specialist, including those set by the SCFHS and relevant accreditation bodies.
- Promote and actively contribute to a culture of patient safety, clinical accountability, and continuous improvement within the Radiology Department.
