Position Overview

Responsibilities

• Complete required safety training and follow laboratory safety procedures, including proper PPE use and safe chemical handling.
• Complete training in laboratory techniques and analytical methods for assigned projects.
• Perform laboratory testing on surface chemistry, coatings, rolling lubricants, and related materials.
• Operate laboratory instruments and equipment under supervision.
• Collect, organize, and analyze laboratory data to identify trends and support technical conclusions.
• Document experimental work and results in laboratory notebooks, data files, and summary reports.
• Prepare technical summaries and present findings to laboratory team members and project stakeholders.
• Assist with laboratory organization and housekeeping.
• Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technologists on R&D, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement activities.

Minimum Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited four-year university pursuing a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Must have completed at least sophomore year by the start of the internship.
• Must be able to work full-time for approximately 12 weeks during summer 2027.
• Basic understanding of chemistry, laboratory practices, data collection, and technical problem solving.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures, safety requirements, and experimental instructions.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.

Preferred Qualifications

• Junior or senior academic standing is preferred.
• Coursework or experience in organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, materials science, polymers, coatings, or surface science is preferred.
• Previous laboratory experience through coursework, research, co-op, internship, or academic projects is preferred.
• Experience with laboratory instrumentation or analytical techniques such as FTIR, GC-FID, GC-MS, microscopy, spectroscopy, titration, or wet chemistry is preferred.
• Ability to analyze technical data, summarize findings, and communicate results clearly is preferred.
• Curiosity, initiative, and interest in aluminum processing, recycling, sustainability, and industrial R&D are preferred.
