Role Overview

Planning Services Development & Solutions develops tools, modeling frameworks, and market analytics for resource and energy adequacy planning.

The role conducts research and analysis supporting capacity and energy adequacy modeling, demand forecasting, supply accreditation, and long-term system projections amid energy transition and changing demand.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Assess future system needs and reliability trends, and evaluate technologies for capacity value, flexibility, and energy adequacy.
  • Research future resource mixes using optimization and scenario analysis across reliability, cost, emissions, flexibility, uncertainty, and decarbonization.
  • Analyze market design improvements, run simulations and what-if studies, and lead stakeholder discussions about model approaches and real-world outcomes.
  • Lead or provide technical direction for capacity and energy adequacy assessments, including LOLE, EEU, and other risk metrics.
  • Develop methods for representing renewables, storage, distributed energy resources, demand response, and electrification in probabilistic reliability assessments.
  • Enhance models, assumptions, and datasets to reflect changing system conditions, operating practices, and policy or regulatory drivers.
  • Define model enhancements and functionality; partner with software vendors and internal teams to implement, validate, and document improvements.
  • Benchmark analytical tools and methods for adequacy, capacity accreditation, and production cost or economic dispatch studies.
  • Provide technical and project leadership and present decision-ready findings to technical and non-technical audiences.

What We’re Looking For

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a related technical field plus at least two years of relevant experience; or a related bachelor’s degree plus at least five years of relevant experience.
  • At least two years of power system planning or research experience, including optimization, probabilistic adequacy assessment, and/or production cost simulation.
  • Strong quantitative and data analysis skills, including work with large, complex datasets.
  • Ability to work independently, lead workstreams, and collaborate effectively.
  • Knowledge of planning and operating criteria, standards, and reliability frameworks such as ISO/RTO practices, NERC, or NPCC.

Work Arrangement

  • Hybrid work environment with three days per week onsite.
  • The role is U.S.-based; relocation is required if the successful candidate resides outside the United States.

Compensation

  • The expected salary range for the R&D Analyst/Engineer level is $100,000–$135,000 per year; senior or lead levels are also considered at $135,000–$180,000 annually.
  • The role is eligible for an annual performance bonus.

Benefits

  • Benefits include retirement and financial planning support, tuition reimbursement, professional development, wellness programs, and flexible work hours.
  • Other benefits include health insurance, spending and savings accounts, student debt support, life and disability insurance, paid time off and leave, and employee assistance.
