Role overview

The Product Engineering Manager leads the Product Engineering team and ensures technical ownership from concept through production and lifecycle support.

The role supports the OCS product roadmap and follows the company’s Product Evolution Process.

Engineering leadership and delivery

  • Lead and develop Product and Systems Engineering capability, capacity, standards and specialist knowledge.
  • Own products from concept through development, industrialisation, production release, deployment and lifecycle support.
  • Integrate optical, opto-mechanical, electronic, embedded and application software, FPGA/DSP, test and manufacturing requirements.
  • Lead technical reviews covering requirements, architecture, design, integration, verification, validation, qualification and release readiness.
  • Define and resource verification, validation and qualification strategies with objective evidence against approved requirements.
  • Ensure design considers manufacture, assembly, test, calibration, reliability, maintainability, serviceability and deployment.

Risk, production and collaboration

  • Partner with Process Engineering, Operations, Quality and Supply Chain on manufacturing transfer, yield, traceability and readiness risks.
  • Lead responses to significant product failures and systemic field or production issues, including root-cause analysis, containment and corrective action.
  • Use field, reliability, manufacturing, test and customer data to drive improvements and inform product architecture and roadmap decisions.
  • Manage technical risks using registers, reviews, DFMEA/PFMEA inputs, reliability analysis and qualification evidence.
  • Advise product and project management on feasibility, scope, dependencies, technical risk, resources and roadmap options.
  • Represent Product Engineering in customer, supplier and cross-functional technical discussions and maintain product documentation and decision history.

Essential profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM subject.
  • At least 7 years’ experience as a product or systems engineer and at least 3 years in technical leadership.
  • Experience across the product development lifecycle; commitment to quality and on-time delivery.

Desirable profile

  • Chartered Engineer status is desirable.

Authority and cover

The manager may approve engineering deliverables, requirements and architecture baselines, review outcomes, verification evidence and release recommendations within delegated authority.

The role may allocate engineering resources within approved priorities and headcount, and withhold technical approval if safety, compliance, reliability, quality, manufacturability or requirements are not demonstrated.

Material scope, cost, schedule, strategy, customer-commitment or business-risk decisions are escalated to the Head of Engineering and relevant accountable owner.

A competent senior Product or Systems Engineer may cover routine operational and technical matters; the Head of Engineering retains accountability for material people, budget, release and high-risk technical decisions.
