About This Role

A Private Nurse (often called a Private Duty Nurse) is a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) who provides one-on-one, personalized medical care to a single patient in a non-hospital setting. Unlike floor nurses who manage multiple patients, a private nurse is dedicated exclusively to one individual.

Core Responsibilities

Medical & Clinical Care:

• Medication Administration: Managing IVs, giving injections, and administering oral medications on a strict schedule.
• Wound Care: Cleaning, dressing, and monitoring surgical wounds, bedsores, or injuries.
• Monitoring Vitals: Tracking blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, temperature, and blood sugar.
• Medical Equipment: Operating ventilators, feeding tubes, catheters, suction machines, and oxygen tanks.
• Treatment Coordination: Communicating with the patient’s primary physician, specialists, and physical therapists to adjust care plans.

Daily Living Assistance (hands-on):

• Mobility: Helping the patient move from bed to wheelchair, ambulation, and performing range-of-motion exercises to prevent stiffness.
• Hygiene: Bathing, oral care, toileting, and changing incontinence briefs or linens.
• Feeding: Preparing medically appropriate meals (e.g., pureed, low-sodium) and assisting with eating if the patient has dysphagia or weakness.

Safety & Advocacy:

• Fall Prevention: Keeping the environment clutter-free and ensuring the patient is never left unattended if at risk.
• Symptom Monitoring: Recognizing early signs of infection, sepsis, stroke, or heart failure and alerting emergency contacts.
• Family Communication: Updating family members on the patient’s condition and teaching them how to assist safely.

Work Settings (Where they practice)

• Private Residences: The patient’s own home. This requires the nurse to be self-sufficient and adaptable to the family’s environment.
• Assisted Living / Nursing Homes: A family hires an extra nurse to provide 1:1 care even within a facility to ensure their loved one gets more attention than the facility staff can provide.
• Hospitals (rarely): Sometimes a family hires a private nurse to sit with a critically ill relative in the ICU to advocate for them and provide emotional support when hospital staff is stretched thin.
• Schools/Events: For a child with complex medical needs (e.g., seizure disorder, trach/vent) or an adult requiring care during travel.

• Elderly (Geriatrics): Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or post-hip fracture.
• Chronically Ill: ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, end-stage COPD, or cancer.

• Autonomy: No supervisor in the house; you must make rapid, independent clinical decisions.
• Patience & Compassion: You may be with the same person for 8–12 hours a day, often with repetitive tasks and possible confusion (dementia).
• Communication: Explaining medical jargon to scared families and negotiating care plans with reluctant patients.
• Physical Stamina: Lifting, turning, and transferring a patient (often 150+ lbs) frequently.
• Attention to Detail: Documenting every vital sign, bowel movement, and medication dose for liability and continuity.

Pay: AED180,000.00 - AED220,000.00 per year
