Print Production Operator

Overview

Reporting Line & Team

• Reports to: Production Manager / Studio Lead
• Works closely with: Graphic Designer, Finishing Team, Logistics
• Direct reports: None initially, with potential to lead junior operators as the team grows

Equipment Operation

• Operate large format printers (eco-solvent, latex, or solvent) for banners, vinyl graphics, signage, and wall coverings.
• Run UV printers for direct printing on rigid and flexible substrates including acrylic, wood, metal, glass, and promotional items.
• Manage sublimation printing for textiles, mugs, hard goods, and other compatible products.
• Set up print jobs in RIP software (Onyx, Caldera, ErgoSoft, Wasatch, or similar), select appropriate profiles, and optimise layouts for material efficiency.

Colour Management & Quality

• Perform colour calibration, ICC profile management, and use spectrophotometers to maintain colour accuracy.
• Conduct test prints, evaluate output quality, and make adjustments to achieve required output standards.
• Inspect finished prints for defects and ensure they meet specifications.

Maintenance & Workflow

• Perform routine maintenance including print head cleaning, nozzle checks, ink replenishment, and equipment troubleshooting.
• Manage substrate inventory, loading, and proper handling of media.
• Coordinate with designers to flag file issues and suggest production-friendly modifications.
• Maintain production logs, equipment records, and a clean, organised work area.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience operating large format, UV, and sublimation printers.
• Proficiency with RIP software and print workflow management.
• Strong understanding of colour management, ICC profiles, and colour calibration procedures.
• Knowledge of various print substrates and their handling requirements.
• Mechanical aptitude for equipment maintenance and basic troubleshooting.
• Working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or Affinity Designer for file inspection and minor adjustments.
• Understanding of finishing processes (lamination, cutting, trimming, mounting).
• Strong attention to detail and quality-control mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

• Manufacturer-specific training or certification (Roland, Mimaki, HP Latex, Mutoh, Epson, etc.).
• Experience with cutting plotters, laminators, and post-press finishing equipment.
• Familiarity with variable data printing.
• Knowledge of preventive maintenance schedules and basic equipment repair.

Key Performance Indicators

• Print quality consistency and reject rate (target: less than 2%).
• Equipment uptime and maintenance compliance (target: 95%+ uptime).
• Colour accuracy across jobs (Delta E within agreed tolerance).
• Material waste reduction (target: less than 5% waste).
• Production throughput against weekly targets.
