Principal Engineer - ITS

Role overview

Key responsibilities

• Lead ITS and TCS design delivery through concept, schematic, detailed design, tender, and IFC stages as applicable.
• Guide and supervise ITS engineers and CAD/BIM resources, including task allocation, technical direction, and quality review.
• Own ITS deliverables and ensure designs meet project and authority requirements.
• Develop and review designs for signals, ITS field equipment, communications, CCTV, VMS/DMS, vehicle detection, traffic monitoring, and roadside infrastructure.
• Lead preparation and review of drawings, specifications, design reports, BOQs, and tender documents.
• Ensure compliance with ITC Abu Dhabi ITS standards, manuals, standard drawings, approvals, and applicable UAE standards.
• Lead authority coordination and submissions, respond to comments, and support approvals.
• Review engineering and CAD/BIM work and maintain consistency among specifications, drawings, and BIM models.
• Coordinate ITS interfaces with roads, traffic, street lighting, electrical, utilities, ICT/telecom, security, and other disciplines.
• Support ITS ConOps, system architecture, and communication/network requirements.
• Lead technical meetings with clients, authorities, contractors, and consultants.
• Support proposals, methodologies, fee estimates, and resource planning for new opportunities when required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, ICT, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Preferably 12–15 years of relevant professional experience, including significant ITS and TCS design and delivery.
• Strong experience delivering ITS projects in the UAE and/or GCC region.
• Current ITC Abu Dhabi ITS Approved Engineer / SANAD certification is mandatory.
• Demonstrated experience leading ITS design teams and supervising senior engineers and CAD/BIM resources.
• Experience across multiple project stages; concept/design development through detailed design, tender, construction, and handover is preferred.
• Experience coordinating ITS with multidisciplinary infrastructure design teams.
• Professional registration, Chartered Engineer status, PMP, or equivalent certification is advantageous.

Technical competencies

• Traffic Control Systems and traffic signal design and associated infrastructure.
• ITS CCTV, traffic monitoring, VMS/DMS, traveller information, vehicle detection, and traffic data collection systems.
• ITS field equipment, roadside cabinets, fibre-optic communications, and ITS communications infrastructure.
• ITS Concept of Operations, AutoCAD, and BIM coordination and review.
