Principal Engineer - ITS

Role overview

Key responsibilities

• Lead ITS/TCS design delivery from concept and schematic through detailed design, tender, and IFC stages as applicable.
• Direct, allocate, and review work of Senior ITS Engineers, ITS Engineers, and CAD/BIM resources.
• Develop and review traffic signal, field equipment, communications, CCTV, VMS/DMS, vehicle detection, traffic monitoring, and roadside infrastructure designs.
• Prepare and review drawings, specifications, design reports, BOQs, and tender documents; maintain consistency across specifications, drawings, and BIM models.
• Ensure compliance with ITC Abu Dhabi ITS standards and applicable UAE requirements; lead authority submissions, respond to comments, and support approvals.
• Coordinate ITS interfaces with roads, traffic, street lighting, electrical, utilities, ICT/telecom, security, and other disciplines.
• Support ITS Concept of Operations, system architecture, and communications/network requirements.
• Lead technical meetings and support proposals, methodologies, fee estimates, and resource planning.

Qualifications and experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, ICT, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Preferably 12–15 years of relevant experience with significant ITS and TCS design and delivery experience.
• Strong ITS project delivery experience in the UAE and/or GCC.
• Current ITC Abu Dhabi ITS Approved Engineer / SANAD certification is mandatory.
• Experience leading ITS design teams, supervising senior engineers and CAD/BIM resources, and coordinating multidisciplinary infrastructure design.
• Experience across project stages is required; experience from concept through detailed design, tender, construction, and handover is preferred.
• Professional registration, Chartered Engineer status, PMP, or equivalent certification is advantageous.

Technical competencies

• Traffic Control Systems and traffic signal design.
• ITS CCTV, traffic monitoring, VMS/DMS, traveller information, vehicle detection, and traffic data collection.
• ITS field equipment, roadside cabinets, fibre-optic and ITS communications infrastructure.
• ITS Concept of Operations, AutoCAD, and BIM coordination and review.

Work location

• Work location model is Hybrid.
• New hires must attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office.
