Role overview

Permanent, full-time Principal Engineer Control Systems role in Melbourne Water’s Asset Knowledge & Technology team.

Acts as Melbourne Water’s technical authority for control systems engineering across critical infrastructure.

Provides organisation-wide leadership in engineering standards, architecture, governance and assurance.

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee engineering across SCADA, PLC/RTU, telemetry, industrial networks, historians, alarm systems, control logic and associated OT platforms.
  • Set standards, reference architectures, technical specifications and approved configurations; provide final judgment on complex engineering matters.
  • Assure design, configuration, integration, testing, validation, commissioning and management-of-change requirements.
  • Oversee safety and risk processes, including CHAZOP, HAZOP, functional safety and safety-in-design.
  • Set lifecycle and maintenance requirements covering reliability, obsolescence, maintainability, backup and recovery, configuration integrity and replacement.
  • Assure major modifications, renewals and integrations; lead incident and non-conformance investigations and corrective actions.
  • Provide technical authority over vendor and contractor engineering; lead the engineering community of practice and mentor engineers.

Requirements and experience

  • Tertiary qualification in Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic, Control Systems Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline; recognised engineering qualification and RPEV registration required.
  • Extensive control systems experience in critical infrastructure, energy, utilities, heavy industry, rail, mining or major-hazard environments.
  • Principal Engineer, SME, Discipline Technical Authority or equivalent experience judging complex, high-risk matters.
  • Expert knowledge of SCADA, PLC/RTU, industrial communications, telemetry, historian platforms, functional safety and integration in live operations.
  • Experience across the control systems lifecycle and knowledge of industrial risk, technical governance, management of change and safety-in-design.
  • Working knowledge of Victorian engineering, WHS, plant and electrical safety obligations and OT cybersecurity frameworks.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an AusCheck Clearance.
