****About You:****

The Music Technician plays a vital technical and operational role within the Performing Arts Department, supporting the delivery of an ambitious and high-quality music curriculum across a large British all-through school.

The post holder ensures the smooth technical operation of music classrooms, rehearsal spaces, recording facilities, and performance venues, maintaining professional standards in sound engineering, lighting, music technology, and instrument care.

A key aspect of the role includes responsibility for the maintenance and repair of musical instruments, ensuring resources are safe, functional, and preserved to the highest standard.

Working closely with teaching staff and students, the Music Technician enables exceptional curriculum delivery, co-curricular enrichment, and high-calibre performances that reflect the expectations of a premium British school in Dubai.

The role requires technical expertise, outstanding organisation, and a proactive, solutions-focused mindset.

Technical Support For Curriculum Delivery

  • Prepare and maintain music classrooms, rehearsal rooms, and performance venues to ensure lessons operate efficiently and professionally.
  • Provide technical support for classroom teaching, including woodwind, brass, strings, keyboards, rock instruments, PA systems, and recording equipment.
  • Support examination coursework requirements (GCSE, A Level, BTEC or equivalent), including recording, editing, and production.
  • Assist staff and students in the effective use of music technology and digital audio workstations (e.g., Logic Pro, GarageBand, Sibelius, Ableton, etc.).
  • Ensure specialist equipment is prepared and configured to meet lesson objectives.

Performance & Production Support

  • Lead the technical setup and operation of sound, lighting, and AV systems for concerts, recitals, assemblies, productions, and whole-school events.
  • Provide live sound engineering during performances.
  • Work collaboratively with Drama and Dance teams on productions and large-scale showcases.
  • Manage stage setup, microphones, monitors, cabling, and backstage technical requirements.
  • Support rehearsals and performances, including after-school, evening, and occasional weekend events.

Instrument Maintenance & Workshop Expertise

  • Take lead responsibility for the ongoing maintenance, servicing, and repair of musical instruments across both Primary and Secondary phases.
  • Carry out routine in-house repairs including restringing guitars, replacing drumheads, basic brass and woodwind adjustments, percussion repairs, cable repairs, and electronic troubleshooting of amplified instruments.
  • Diagnose faults in instruments and technical equipment promptly, determining whether issues can be resolved internally or require specialist external service.
  • Maintain a safe, organised workshop space with appropriate tools, spare parts, and safety procedures.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules to extend the lifespan of instruments and reduce long-term replacement costs.
  • Liaise with external technicians for piano tuning and complex repairs, ensuring quality assurance and value for money.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs and inventory records to support audit, inspection, and budget planning.
  • Promote student responsibility in instrument care, providing guidance on safe handling and correct storage.

Equipment & Resource Management

  • Maintain, catalogue, and audit all music equipment, instruments, and digital resources.
  • Oversee safe storage, transportation, and setup of instruments and staging equipment.
  • Maintain recording studio facilities (where applicable), ensuring hardware and software are fully operational.
  • Support departmental budget tracking related to technical resources, repairs, and replacement planning.
  • Contribute to long-term equipment lifecycle planning.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all music and technical equipment complies with health and safety regulations.
  • Conduct routine safety checks on electrical, sound, and staging equipment.
  • Support risk assessments for concerts, productions, and performances.
  • Ensure safe manual handling and secure storage of large instruments and technical infrastructure.
  • Adhere strictly to safeguarding procedures during rehearsals, performances, and events.

Student Enrichment & Development

  • Support students in developing technical skills in sound engineering, music production, and stage management.
  • Assist with co-curricular clubs such as recording club, production crew, or technical theatre groups.
  • Encourage student leadership within technical production teams.
  • Support external performances, competitions, and community events.

Inspection Readiness & Professional Standards

  • Ensure Performing Arts facilities reflect the standards expected by KHDA and British School Overseas inspections.
  • Maintain organised, professional, and inspection-ready learning environments.
  • Contribute positively to school tours, inspection visits, marketing events, and parent showcases.
  • Act as a professional ambassador for the Performing Arts Department and the wider school community.

Safeguarding & Professional Conduct

  • Uphold the highest standards of safeguarding and child protection in line with UAE and school policies.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and ethical conduct at all times.
  • Support a culture of care, respect, and student wellbeing across the Performing Arts Department.
  • ****Knowledge & Qualifications****
  • Relevant qualifications in Music Technology, Sound Engineering, Music Production, Instrument Technology, or related field.
  • Strong technical knowledge of live sound systems, PA equipment, microphones, and mixing desks.
  • Experience using digital audio workstations (DAWs).
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements within music and technical theatre environments.
  • Demonstrable practical instrument repair and maintenance skills, including routine in-house repairs and electronic troubleshooting.
  • ****Desirable:****
  • Experience working in a school or educational environment.
  • Knowledge of British curriculum music specifications (GCSE/A Level/BTEC).
  • Formal training or certification in instrument repair, luthiery, brass/woodwind servicing, or electronics repair.
  • First Aid certification.
