Role overview

Leads metallurgy, technical feasibility, and product quality support for specialty tubular products and aerospace-focused programs.

The position works across manufacturing, quality, engineering, commercial, procurement, customers, and suppliers.

Technical leadership and product development

  • Serve as subject matter expert for stainless steel, nickel alloy, titanium alloy, and specialty tubular products for aerospace, defense, energy, industrial, and engineered applications.
  • Advise teams on material selection, processing, product performance, standards, and technical documentation.
  • Support alloy and process roadmaps, new product development, and technical feasibility reviews before quotation.
  • Review customer specifications, drawings, material and testing requirements, acceptance criteria, and technical risks.
  • Support customer and OEM qualification with technical data packages, process capability evidence, traceability, and metallurgical validation.

Quality and manufacturing support

  • Lead root cause investigations into customer complaints, product failures, manufacturing defects, and quality issues using 8D, 5 Why, and Fishbone methods.
  • Conduct metallographic examinations, review mechanical testing, investigate failures, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Partner with operations, quality, and engineering to optimize processes, yield, efficiency, and product consistency.
  • Provide metallurgical input on seamless, welded, and welded-drawn tube production and aerospace qualification routes.
  • Oversee mechanical, corrosion, and metallurgical testing; review technical documents, material certifications, and testing protocols.
  • Support internal and external audits, customer audits, qualification reviews, and technical presentations.

Standards and continuous improvement

  • Ensure compliance with applicable ASTM, ASME, SAE, AMS, MIL-SPEC, CSA, ISO, AS9100, NADCAP-related, and customer requirements.
  • Support inspection and verification, including ultrasonic, eddy current, hydrostatic, dimensional, mechanical, corrosion, and metallographic testing.
  • Identify improvements in productivity, quality, sustainability, and cost; participate in Lean and continuous improvement projects.
  • Support technical training for engineers, technicians, operators, and quality personnel.

Education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline is required; a relevant master’s degree is an asset.
  • Five to ten years of progressive metallurgy or materials engineering experience in manufacturing is required.
  • Specialty alloy, tube and pipe, metal forming, welding, seamless tube, or welded-drawn tubing experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with failure analysis, metallography, mechanical testing, process investigations, quality systems, and regulatory compliance is required.
  • Aerospace, defense, mission-critical quality systems, customer approvals, material traceability, and specification-driven qualification experience is an asset.
  • P.Eng. designation or eligibility for PEO registration is preferred.

Technical competencies

  • Metallurgical analysis; alloy metallurgy; welding metallurgy; tube manufacturing and process routes; corrosion science; mechanical testing interpretation.
  • Structured problem solving, root cause analysis, 8D, 5 Why, Fishbone, corrective action, preventive action, and effectiveness verification.
  • Customer specification review, feasibility assessment, contract review support, risk identification, statistical analysis, and technical reporting.
  • Project management, technical leadership, and aerospace tubing applications.

Leadership and safety

  • Strong analytical, communication, customer-focused, organizational, project management, and cross-functional influencing skills.
  • Able to present technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Commitment to workplace safety, required PPE, company health and safety policies, audits, investigations, and safety initiatives.

Work environment

  • Work spans the manufacturing floor, metallurgical laboratory, and office, with frequent interaction with production, engineering, quality, and commercial teams.
  • Occasional travel to customer locations, suppliers, and sister facilities within North America.
