One of our clients in the UK is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with hands-on experience in the design and development of fuel nozzles and precision fluid delivery components.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical design, fluid mechanics, manufacturing processes, and product validation.
This role involves developing innovative fuel nozzle designs that meet performance, durability, and manufacturability requirements while ensuring compliance with applicable industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop fuel nozzles and related components for combustion or fuel delivery systems.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, NX).
- Perform design calculations related to fluid flow, pressure drop, spray characteristics, structural integrity, and thermal performance.
- Conduct tolerance stack-up analysis, GD&T application, and design for manufacturability (DFM) and assembly (DFA).
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, testing, quality, and procurement to optimize product performance.
- Support prototype development, testing, and validation, including root cause analysis of design issues.
- Work with suppliers to develop and qualify manufacturing processes for precision components.
- Participate in design reviews, FMEA, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Review test data and implement design improvements based on performance results.
- Prepare technical reports, specifications, and engineering documentation.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable industry standards, customer specifications, and safety requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- 4+ years of experience in mechanical design, with proven experience designing fuel nozzles or fuel injection components.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, or Siemens NX.
- Strong understanding of:
- Fluid mechanics and spray dynamics
- Heat transfer and thermodynamics
- Precision machining and manufacturing processes
• GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
- Material selection for high-temperature and corrosive environments
- Experience with tolerance analysis and design optimization.
- Familiarity with engineering change management and product lifecycle management (PLM) systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and technical documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CFD analysis (ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, CONVERGE, or similar).
- Knowledge of FEA tools (ANSYS, Abaqus, or similar).
- Experience with fuel atomization, spray characterization, combustion systems, or gas turbine/engine components.
- Knowledge of additive manufacturing for complex fuel system components.
- Experience in aerospace, automotive, power generation, or industrial combustion systems.
- Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, DFMEA, PFMEA, Six Sigma, or Lean Manufacturing methodologies.
