Role Description
This is a contract, on-site Master Mariner role based in Abu Dhabi.
The Master Mariner will have overall command of assigned vessels, ensuring safe navigation, cargo operations, and adherence to international and local maritime regulations.
Daily responsibilities include planning and monitoring voyages, supervising bridge and deck operations, managing port arrivals and departures, and maintaining communication with company operations, port authorities, and other stakeholders.
The role will oversee safety drills, risk assessments, emergency preparedness, and implementation of the Safety Management System (SMS) and ISM/ISPS Code requirements.
The Master Mariner will also mentor and evaluate deck officers and crew, maintain discipline and professional standards on board, and ensure accurate documentation, reporting, and logbook entries.
Qualifications
- Valid Master Mariner (Master Unlimited) CoC, with all required STCW certifications and medical fitness in accordance with international standards.
- Extensive sea-going experience in command or as Chief Officer on comparable vessels (e.g., tanker, bulk, container, offshore), with strong navigational and ship-handling competence.
- Proven expertise in voyage planning, bridge resource management (BRM), ECDIS/radar operations, COLREGs compliance, and safe watchkeeping practices.
- Strong knowledge of international maritime regulations and standards, including SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, ISPS, and flag/state and port authority requirements.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to lead multicultural crews, manage performance, handle conflicts, and foster a safety-first culture on board.
- Experience in cargo planning and operations, stability and ballast control, mooring operations, and port/terminal interface and documentation.
- Solid understanding of safety management systems, risk assessment, incident reporting, emergency response procedures, and drills (fire, abandon ship, pollution prevention).
- Proficiency in English (spoken and written) for reports, communication with stakeholders, and use of technical documentation; additional languages are an advantage.
